Born This Way

Born This Way

A Poem by OfDeathandLove

Taking one glance home,

You drove off north,

Saying you were “born this way.”

Now you’re on the streets

Shoving up needles

And smoking ‘jouana.

‘stead of in a house

Hammering down nails

And squirting weeds.

I’m hoping one day you’ll

Look back once again

Here towards home,

‘cause you were born this way.

Now you’re hiding from the police

Hoping they won’t catch you

‘stead of showing your lil’ brother

How to catch frogs.

I’m hoping one day you’ll

Look back once again

Here towards home,

‘cause you were born this way.

And now you’re catching your breath

Hearing machines beep in your ear,

Wondering if you’ll live to see another day

‘stead of being out of breath,

Hearing the “I do” whispered in your ear

Knowing you have forever in front of you.

I’m hoping one day you’ll

Look back once again

Here towards home,

‘cause you were born this way.

Wow the emotion in this is palpable, soul wrenching and raw. It is letting go and holding on all at the same time. Beautiful!

such a sad tale. I'm not sure if this is a mother talking or a lover or an old friend, but it's excellent anyway. the descriptions and the fast-pace comparing what they thought they wanted versus what was already provided for them. important to see reality for what it is. great write Kyra.
