Behind The Eyes

Behind The Eyes

A Story by Nyida Strong

She smiled sweetly, pleasantly to one and all. She had this quality about her that others see and like, but take for granted. No one noticed, no one saw.

No one but him.

He saw it one day when he did what no one else did. He took the time to see her to truly who she was. He looked past her lovely smile, past the unspoken lie and into her deep black eyes, eyes so full, so fluid that he found himself lost in them. Her eyes weren't cold, not by any means. What he saw hurt him more then any words ever could, more then any blade. The pain hidden just behind her eyes was enough to bring any man to his knees.

He saw past her show, past her lies, past her act to the real child in the woman's clothes. More then the scars of emotions in her eyes, he saw the ones on her arms. And loved her all the more.

This piece succinctly portrays a truth of life: Those who smile on the outside sometimes weep on the inside. Most people don't seem to register that, either because they don't want to (Turn that frown upsidedown! Don't worry, be happy!) or because they are blind (having, as Hermione Granger says, "the emotional range of a teaspoon").

But in this story there is one person who does see and who does not turn away or become judgmental. It's just too bad that this doesn't happen in real life.
