She Seemed Above it All

She Seemed Above it All

A Poem by Nyida Strong

She seemed to be above it all,
the scorn, the loathing, the hate.
The abuse that was heaped upon her,
the pain forced down her throat.

Her eyes betrayed nothing
and her voice was always calm.
No one ever knew the real girl
hiding behind the mask.

She faded within herself,
the spark she used to carry
died the slow death of the damned
and never chanced to return.

She became darker, a shadow
wearing dark colours to vanish.
Long sleeves hid her secret from
the uncaring world.

Her arms and legs were once
beautiful and young became
hidden as the rest of her
in plain sight.

The pain she carried finally
became to  much to bear.
The cuts one day changed
into something worse.

No longer was she trying
to survive, to exist.
She wanted the pain to stop
so desperately!

"Just once more," she whispered
as she took a blade and traced
her arm with a few quick nicks.
Too late, it was done...

She breathed her last in my arms
as I screamed for the help that
didn't arrive in time.
Her name... was Hope.

There are many fragile people hiding behind masks who lead difficult and painful lives. This poem is well written. Hope for them is a four letter word with no meaning.

...and in my shadow lies the weight of my pain, that is why it cannot get up from the ground
