Shell of a Woman

Shell of a Woman

A Poem by Nyida Strong

Lies, lies have made me a shell of a woman,
Trust is dissolved in the acid of mendacity.
My entire world fades into shades of
sickly grey and brackish shadows
from which no light seems to dawn.

Lost pieces of my past return
to haunt me, to torment me.
Trapped in the expectations
of the powers that be
from their malevolent throne
of hatred and venom.

I am not whole, am not complete
in this cobbled fortress
of deceit and tyranny.
Hope fades into a memory
as substantial as a mist of vapours.

How oft I feel caged and locked
with another in control of
the only key to my salvation.
Pinned, cornered by the frailties
so very common to mankind's emotions
and sapping the strength until
there is nothing left me
but a single thought.

I like your depth; you mix regular vernacular with an intellectual and emotional content.
