Darkly

Darkly

A Poem by nval
"

Comparison of sunset over an ocean with its sea life and life forms to the serenity of a peaceful death

"

In the fleeting light they sift the sea for life,
Gliding often in twos or threes, I know,
And dipping at the moment of the cycle of harvest--

For I have seen them on that cycle, opposed.

The light does last, as life, over a time

Sliding to the edge of the earth,
And it leaves a large and longing lifeline

Of an hour or eighty seasons or forever.

Then, only the remnants of the red and rounded source

Remain more darkly than seen the moment before;

Nonetheless recalled in favor midst the opening night

Like the face you held behind the closing door.

The pallet-glow fades slow to black like on TV--

Dim hues graining against the scene’s decay,

But the smile of starry skies review the legacy
Of companions left to laugh and love along the way.

Darkness, the infant resembles, comely, one of yours.

Quiet, I’m dearly deafened by your thoughts.
Happy, I’ve left the lovers and the loved.
Darkly--not a tyrant--much more sought than fought.
