Little White Lie

Little White Lie

A Poem by Mary Beth Mason
"

Rumors. Horrible rumors.

"

How do you justify that little white lie you told about me?

Did it make you feel better when it made it through town?

Like a tree in bloom, it grew new leaves.

Then they fell from the branches and landed in corners where some people swept them away.

But some of the leaves sat there and rotted and you ruined my life that day.

You said you were sorry. You said you would try to make it up to me.

There's no way in the world you could gather those leaves and some how put them back on the tree.

You could go to each person, try to change their minds, but they'll believe what they want to believe.

Because one little white lie from a great little liar makes a better story than the truth about me.

People love to hate and they love to have someone to put down.

It makes them feel better about their own lives and that's why rumors get passed around.

I hope for your sake that no one decides that they need to make up somethin' 'bout you,

'Cause one little white lie by a great little liar might just be the end of you.

I live in a small Kansas town and was once a country music singer who recorded a couple of songs that I wrote and sang, back in 89/90. They made it onto Cashbox, and were reviewed by Robert Oerman o.. more..
