Christmas Sign

Christmas Sign

A Poem by Mary Beth Mason
"

A grieving widow's first Christmas.

"

We left the Christmas lights on so Santa'd know we were home.

Set out milk and cookies.

Made sure his stocking was hung.

We wrote a thank you note for the reindeer and the elves.

He's sure he heard sleigh bells and saw Rudolph's red nose as he gazed out the window at the falling snow.

He said he felt you with us, but baby, I just don't know.

I got out the train that we bought at the mall. I set the whole thing up and plugged it into the wall.

We should have done this together before we stored it away.

I'll have to make an excuse and run it back to the store because the damn thing won't run around the track

anymore.

Oh but you know our boy - he'll love it, anyway.

If I could make it through Christmas without you here, maybe I can make it through the coming year.

I just can't bring myself to let you go.

I can't understand why you were taken away but give me a sign, for our little boy's sake.

Then I can fake a Merry Christmas Day.

I woke up late to the sound of a train running fast 'round it's track on Christmas Day.

I felt a rush of love around the Christmas tree.

"Santa was here, Mommy! Come and see!"

I got your gift honey, now I believe. I know you heard my prayers on a lonely Christmas Eve.

I made it through Christmas without you here and somehow I'll make it through the coming year.

But I still can't bring myself to let you go.

I'll never understand why you were taken away.

But thanks for the sign honey, we'll be okay.

And thank you for such a special Christmas Eve.
