Reap What I SowA Chapter by nrshrews
I woke up to an uproar. Police were pushing people aside, searching tents. Pushing tents over. Uh-oh. I immediately knew they were looking for me. I peeked my head through the door of my tent to watch. Richmond was up in the Chief Deputies face, who didnt really seem to be concerned with his plight.
"This is outrageous!" Richmond complained. "You-you need a warrant to go searching our property!" The policeman raised his eyebrows. "What property? None of you own property here, this is the town park." Richmond stared at him in shock. "We still deserve our rights! You get your men out of here!" "Listen here, hobo," The cop interrupted as he sighed impatiently; he talked very slowly, as if what he was saying was too much for Richmond to comprehend."We got a report, that someone, a homeless looking teenager, stole some things, and, assaulted a boy..that means he attacked him" He added, "then came over here. We have to investigate these reports every now and then. And we'll need to confiscate some of this... suspiciously gained merchandise." This isn't good. I knelt down to the floor, to be less noticeable, and barely opened the tent curtain to watch. Richmond was clearly tired of him as he clenched his fists in rage. "Now you listen here!" He erupted. He pointed his finger at the policeman threateningly, "I will not tolerate your disrespect, and you will not continue searching our homes!" He calmed down a little, and glared right into the lawmans eyes. "I may not be a sanctioned government official," He continued coldly, almost cruelly, "but I have friends in the government, and they can make your life a living hell. I suggest you get out." The cop scowled and backed down. "Alright boys, nothing here, let's go." He walked away with a haughty disposition, as if he was telling himself he had only left because he had better things to do than deal with street urchins. He glared at Richmond in a way that made my spine shiver. What is wrong with that guy? I wondered. Richmond started walking toward my tent. I panicked and laid down, pretending to sleep. He opened the door for a while; I could feel the draft. He made a weird sniffling sound I'd never heard from him before, like he was trying not to cry. "They'll realize i lied soon enough." He muttered quietly to himself. "Nobody in the government respects me... and I can't protect them much longer." My eyes bulged. I squeezed them shut quickly. As he left, a million thoughts raced through my head. I tried to deny to myself the fact that this was my fault they came. I looked outside of my tent. Our community was demolished. Several objects of varying worth lay on the grass broken, due to the apathetic carelessness of the police force. Some people were covering bruises inflicted on them for resisting. Everyone around me seemed nervous as they re-erected their shelters and counted the things the police had stolen from them. Soon someone realized the police had confiscated nearly all the food we had stockpiled. Hopeless faces turned even more downward. Some began to cry, some began to yell in indignation and all of them crowded around Richmond, begging to know what the plan was and if there was a plan at all. "Listen! Listen!" Richmond called out. The crowd roared overtop of him, each person crying in desperation for an answer, refusing to let him speak. The worry in the tenements grew to violent, fearful ecstasy.
"I dont know! I don't know!" He stammered as he tried to satisfy what seemed to be millions of desperate voices I-I-I cant- I don't-" The crowd pressed into him, crushing him, begging for answers he couldn't give. Scared people pulled and shoved and fought to get to Richmond, who had now completely lost control. Anarchy was about to ensue. Bang! a gunshot rang out behind the crowd. My brother Lenny had fired a blank with Richmond's pistol. A hush fell over the crowd as they turned quickly to the noise. "Listen up! Everybody, just stop!" Lenny called out at the top of his voice. "Are we animals? Everyone sit down!" Some unknown force compelled them to the ground. "Have we lost faith in our own leader? Our own mayor? A few bullies have knocked our tents down, and stolen some of our food. Have we not gone through worse?" "How will we eat?!" Someone cried out. Every voice in the neighborhood joined him, until the uproar had become even louder than before. "Quiet! Everybody quiet!" The mayor yelled out. Everyone was once again silenced. Lenny nodded and smiled. "Lenny is right. We have gone through worse, and we have only come out stronger. I will plead our case to the city mayor. Perhaps he will help us. As for the food.." The mayor was at a loss for words. Lenny took control once again. "As for the food, and the supplies, me and my brother River will get them. We will get twice as much as they stole, and even more then!" My eyes nearly fell out of their sockets. We will?! "Yes," Lenny assured, as if he was reading my mind personally, "we will." I motioned for him to back off. Lenny changed his tone quickly. "Uh-um, but we cant do it alone! If we.. if we get organized, we can all put in, and together, we can... we can-and we will bring ourselves out!" The people raised their voices again; this time in loud, victorious hope. I nodded and smiled,as if to say "Good job". Little did i realize that this put me on the line. Soon people flocked to me as if I had suddenly become a knight in shining armor; not only did they need me to feed all of them, they were now stupid or desperate enough to think I could help lead them, failing to realize that the whole event was my fault. This can't turn out good. © 2016 nrshrewsAuthor's Note
