The ManiacA Story by AnneCamdenLast night my roommate, Esther, and I rushed into our apartment with just seconds to the Super Bowl kickoff. We had been shopping for libations and had spent too much time deliberating over our choices. We ran through the door and were settled comfortably on the couch even before our coats hit the floor.
After 2 quarters of the game and a quart of beer, I ran for the bathroom. It was at that point that I noticed the front door was open. Having more important concerns, I quickly closed it, continued on, then hurried back to the game. The score was tied with a minute-and-a-half left in the final quarter. Esther got up and staggered towards the bathroom. The game ended, post-game interviews were wrapped up, and she still hadn’t returned. I assumed she had retired for the night. The television held no further interest so I went to bed as well.
As I lay in bed, I thought how unusual it was for Esther to have gone to bed before the game was over, and she had never said goodnight. It was also unusual that she closed her bedroom door. It was at that point that I remembered THE OPEN FRONT DOOR!
I realized then that there was a maniac in her room. Apparently, he had chosen her room over mine and had hidden, waiting for his victim. Poor Esther, thank the gods that she had been somewhat intoxicated before the lethal blows occurred. Surely that was the reason I hadn’t heard any screams.
My heart stopped when I heard someone moving around in her bedroom and I realized that the maniac was coming after me. Why had I unplugged the phone in my room? Her door opened and I started to pray.
My door opened and it was at that point I saw a shape looming in the shadows. Then Esther emerged. "I thought you had died in there," I said. "I guess I did. All that beer was too much. I gotta go.
I released a sigh of relief, then went to shut my bedroom door. As I turned to go back to bed, I felt the honed edge of a cold steel blade slice my throat and the hot breath of a maniac on the back of my neck.
