The Right to Criticize

The Right to Criticize

A Poem by AnneCamden

The right to criticize

Must be earned

Even if the advice

Is constructive in nature.

Before you are entitled to tinker

With another person's self-esteem,

You are obligated first to demonstrate

Your respect for him as a person.

[I am the sister of "Anne Camden" who died 7/16/2008. In going through some of her belongings, I came across some things she wrote years ago (all before 1993). I have posted them and have a couple more to post. Anything you read that was posted 8/1 or later has been posted posthumously in her memory.

I agree with your principle, but not the practice. If you post something for others to read, you must be prepared for their critique be it good or bad. Now that doesn't mean that they should "slam" someone just because they don't like it, but they should be polite about it and explain why they didn't like it. After all, honest criticism (good or bad) is the only way we can improve the quality of what we write. Providing we are capable of learning from said criticism. Still, as for your poem, it is well written and a good message none-the-less.
