He calls me Anne

He calls me Anne

A Poem by AnneCamden

My friends and family tell me,

“They are the enemy. They will hurt you, so you should hurt them first.”

Their friends and family tell them,

“They are the enemy. They will hurt you, so you should hurt them first.”

I hear and I nod while I sigh but I don’t listen and where did my attitude bring me?

On a Sunday afternoon, while walking next to the river, I saw the enemy.

I spent a magnificent Sunday afternoon with the enemy sitting side by side on the riverbank

What if he had done as they say? What if, in his fear, he had hurt me first?

What if I had done as they say? What if, in my fear, I had hurt him first?

I don’t call him enemy. I call him Zen.

He doesn’t call me enemy. He calls me, Anne.

They are not the enemy unless they believe they are.

We are not the enemy unless we believe we are.

I am a Dove in a World of Hawks.

Lovely! It brought to mind Romeo and Juliet from Juliet's perspective. It must have been a wonderful dream to inspire this one. I won't ask more. :D

I too, am a dove. Aeschylus also said, "The first casualty of war is truth."
