Tufts of Gray

Tufts of Gray

A Poem by Norbanus
"

Looking back

"
We hold our peace and watch as Winter nears,
then pick our way out from the chattering youth.
Remembering what’s happened through the years,
there is no need to talk. We know the truth
She watched my tufts of gray, which once were black,
and placed her hand upon my sagging shoulder.
I lead the way outside, creating slack,
as I have done since youth, when we were bolder.
My love is with me as we make our way,
as she has been since nineteen-fifty-eight.
The smile she draws from me has made my day.
I hold her fragile hand ‘fore it’s too late.
Café behind us now, we trudge the snow,
back to the quiet home and fireplace glow.

Oh, there are few things I love more than a heartwarming poem that might be about winter, but is really about enduring love.
The fact that it is a sonnet, and my favourite kind, Shakespearean, is a little added sprinkle on top of it all. Great iambic pentameter, in this piece and throughout. Very much appreciated - I seldom read flawless or near flawless meter.

My favourite lines are the entire third stanza, a spiral volta that curves right back into the love narrative. :):)

Excellent sonnet!

Hi, Sonneteer! ; )
I was sent here by a fellow poet who enjoys reading my sonnets, because he assured me i am not the only legitimate Sonnet poet onsite, and how right he is … though, to be truthful, there a few others here, too. : )
After a scansion of your beautifully rendered lines, clear, concise syntax, smooth, easy flow, vivid imagery, and sentimentally tender moments in dancing timbre, I am more than a bit smitten by your fine skills.
I am quite certain I'll be frequenting your pages, if you'll not mind.
The olde eye caught a coupl's trochees ending L6 and 8, with 11-counts, but easy fixes, if you've a mind to.

Whatever, obviously, I love it … thank you, Sir for the delightfully pleasurable treat!
Drop by my pages anytime, and find something to enjoy! ⁓ Richard : )

Beautiful tribute to one's beloved . . . I assume yours? I love the simple expressions of physicality between the two, stated with respect & affection, showing an experience I have never even come close to knowing in this life. Thanks for sharing how it can be *smile* (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
