Rooftop SunriseA Story by mae23
"We did it," I whisper. "All night just to see the sunrise. Are we crazy or-" I cut off as I see that she is sleeping. "Or asleep." I roll my eyes, exasperated yet fairly amused. Tempted, I go to reach out to her but pause. She's a beautiful sleeper. Her face is calm, all the worry usually found there has disappeared leaving only a tender simplicity in her beauty. Her lips are full and slightly parted, beckoning anyone who dares to lean in for a kiss.
I would never dare. Slowly, my fingers brush hair from her face causing her eyes to open. Green stares back at me as she realizes where we are. "Sorry, I didn't mean to." She props herself up on her elbows and her eyes turn to look out in front of us; I keep mine on her. "That's okay, You're up just in time." Together, we stare as the sun rises above the horizon. Mesmerized by the warm oranges and pinks wrapping around us, we watch as it lights up the world in front of us. From the rooftop of my house, a favorite spot of ours, we see rays of sunlight stretching, searching for any bit of lingering darkness ready to chase it away. "Wow." It escapes her lips in a hushed breath, a sigh of amazement. "Beautiful." I agree with a nod finding myself unable to form words. The once black town before us is now bathed in morning light. "Thanks for making me do this." She says to me without turning her head. "Of course." I turn my head toward her and say, with more emotion than I mean to. "I couldn't see something as wonderful as this without you."
