The Neighborhood

The Neighborhood

A Poem by Barbary Chaapel

The Neighborhood

Bad-talking crows,

Cacophony of rough words,

Indignant mob,

Roost-rule.

Lesser birds huddle

Low in the pine tree

Waiting for it to be over.

High in the leaf canopy

Hawk tries to stand his limb,

Foolishly

Caught red-taloned

With egg on his beak.

The crows would stone him

If they could,

Such is their winged ire.

Hawk capitulates.

Mere inches from hawk’s ruffled tail,

Young daredevils of the tribe fly,

Ripped out of their tiny skulls,

At this chance to make their feathers.

Ahhhh! This is splendid!!! You have taken the events and elements of nature and so perfectly dropped them into a dark, gritty urban setting - your ingenuity and creativeness are so strong and praiseworthy!
I have never seen anything quite like it!
Of course, in my tiny part of the world, it is not uncommon to see some portion of this aerial scenario, soemtimes with crows and other times with mockingbirds bedevilling a red-tailed hawk as he climbs higher and higher, hoping to be left alone... until, finally tiring of the game, the hawk pulls a 180 roll and suddenly his pursuers scatter from the outstretched talons...
This was so very well done!!!

Such is the way with the "young Turks of the air!" A wonderful picture you paint here!

What a flight of delight!
The word choices took my breathe and also made me giggle!
'Indignant -mob', 'Red taloned with egg on his beak', tiny skulls...
You have illuminated a world so few even notice exists.
Sounded like a good old fashioned turf war.
This is my kind of 'hood' !
Loved everything about this work.

These naughty boys, my brethren ... so loud and defiant. This resonates with me on several levels....of course as crows. And because it is you. But thirdly it is exceptionally well done animation of birds, you know you really got inside their heads and brought them to life. Again, I loved it.
