![]() Prologue - SacrificeA Chapter by SamNo one could understand how something that sounded amazing could turn so deadly. Not one person who had survived could wrap their minds around it. Lifeless bodies lay surrounding the living like dust. There was so much blood that even the most unemotional and unattached person felt like they were going to be sick. The dead ranged in age from being children to full grown adults. They all had their eyes closed; hiding the fear that had settled within. Many had their fist clenched to distract from the pain and torture they had endured. Blood leaked from neck and chest wounds, painting the marble floor a crimson red. Though every death is sad and heart breaking, the worst was the small child in the center, one of the few survivors, staring at her mother’s mangled body with tears that glistened. Her words echoed through the detective’s mind repeatedly, telling her mother to wait for her in heaven. She only had been a child, best at six or seven years old. Even so naïve, she knew. She would not be seeing her mother for hopefully a very long time. But she would wait… “The girl is gone. No trace of her,” His partner said with a sigh. His voice was rough and exhausted from the sight of the scene. The detective shook his head, knowing that this would stay with him and his partner until they die. “Was it really worth losing all of these people just to go after a monster we aren’t even sure we can kill? We just put another child’s life in danger, Sloane. What if this doesn’t work? We just put our own country in danger by giving him freedom to kill again!” Another detective had said. Sloane put his face in his hands, tired of looking at all of the bodies. He clearly had not thought this through enough to continue, but he couldn’t stop now, even if he wanted to. He was given orders by the President himself. He wanted this creature dead before he had gotten ahold of any other victims. No one had thought he was capable of doing this much damage, all for one girl. Almost thirty people had died tonight and it was their fault. They weren’t guarded enough. “We need to keep going. We can’t stop.” Sloane whispered, taking one more peek at the child next to her mother. Another survivor, a young woman probably in her late teens or early twenties, gathered the girl in her harms, rocking her back and forth. She too had lost someone, her boyfriend who had died trying to protect her just as the mother had. “We’ll find the girl he had kidnapped…and then we will kill him.” © 2011 SamAuthor's Note
