Was It You?

Was It You?

A Poem by Thomas
"

A man and his one magic night with his dream man.

"

I thought I saw you near me

Out of the corner of my eye

So I looked and saw somebody else

It left me wondering why

Why, elusive amalgam,

Do you seek to flee from me

Leaving in your wake a series

Of could-have-been's and might-be's?

Do you not long to meet me

As I often do for you?

In a worldly array of colors,

Why can I only see the blue?

Do you remember that magic night

We spent so long ago?

I asked you if this was real

I don't recall hearing no

You chanted German songs of love

And I sang along in French

Our lunchtime picnic was spread out

In the park near the bench

Where we shared our first kiss

Underneath the midday sun

I counted down the hours

Before two could become one

You made me laugh. You made me cry

Not tears of pain, but joy

You made me think. I thought so hard

How to be more than just a boy

To be the man I need to be

To be the man I see in you

To be smart, caring, lyrical, loving,

Comical in everything you do

We danced the night away

'Neath a starry sky so bright

Fernando on the guitar

Made the transition into night

Sometime near the break of dawn

You kissed me on the cheek

And told me that if we would be one

It would be up to me to seek

To awake and uncover what's hidden within

You're on the path I chose

You kissed me again and said your good-byes

On the spinning gazebo, I froze

I convinced myself, after I woke,

It was a dream and nothing more

That the cost of love was heartache

And to love would leave me sore

But today, I heard your German song

And I tried to sing along

But my tune was sharp, my timing off

And my words came out all wrong

I thought I tasted the nape of your neck

I thought I smelled your Calvin Klein

I thought I felt your chest against me

I thought you were about to be mine

I thought I saw you standing there

So I turned around to see

That the pain I feel is all too real

You were nowhere nearby me

As I tried to remember the laughter

As I tried to remember the food

As I tried to remember the tango

All I could remember was you.

I found this to be so tender, full of freshness mingled with an innocent love, your flow of words, and the images you portray relate to many loves lost, memories, but it was the innocence that captured me, and the mixed sorrow.
