Neverland

Neverland

A Poem by noahbrannigan
"

Come with me, I promise we can be free.

"

We sit still in the empty car.

Nothing to hear,

But the sounds of our unsteady breaths.

And the fast beating hearts,

Against our chests.

This is our third parking lot we stop at of the night.

Outside it's dark now.

Nothing to see around,

But the shadow of light rain.

And the clear droplets across the window pane.

I don't understand why we are here.

You don't say a word,

So neither do I.

I can't help but think this is absurd.

Something is not right.

No, you seem different tonight.

Everything is definitely not alright.

I think to speak first, but bite my tongue.

The parking lot is empty,

Only a few street lamps dim low.

It is so quiet,

I almost cannot hear my thoughts.

I am scared they are too loud,

And you will hear them, too.

So instead, I turn to look to you.

Your face is gives no signs,

Instead you look straight ahead,

For some reason your eyes burn red.

I am afraid of the what you might say.

So I wait.

My eyes search around, waiting for you to sound.

Just hours ago we laughed,

But that time has long since past.

I knew something was wrong,

From the moment you played that song.

You let out a long sigh, just like that, the silence is broken.

Your voice is tired and begins to crack.

You start to tell me a story,

You don't look into at me,

So I turn and don't look back.

You tell me of a man who came to your door.

Already, I don't want to hear anymore.

It was just earlier today.

And what this man had to say,

Reminded you of your father in a way.

The man with the bottomless bottle.

Drinking his sorrows away.

But you still love him just the same.

Even when his fist strikes your face,

You say you are not ready to leave,

You aren't ready to forget this place.

And he is the reason why.

Tears begin to fill your eyes,

I do not see them,

But I hear it in your voice.

I am without words to say.

So I stare off in silence.

Nothing I say will make the pain go away.

I want to help you,

I want to save you.

But I know better,

Than to tell you I know what to do.

So I hold out to you my empty hand.

"Take this," I say.

You stare blankly, "I don't understand."

"Come away with me my friend,

Away to Neverland."

You won't ever have to see this place again.

We can live our days out there,

With Peter Pan.

Every day we play in the sand,

You won't ever have to see the bottles again.

Fly, fly away with me,

We can be lost kids,

We can be free.

Let's runaway from all of reality.

Neverland is the place for lost kids,

Just like you and me.

I will show you the way.

As the dark erases all reminisce,

Of yesterday.

Neverland is the home,

For lost kids who want to be free.

Just like you and me.

I'm just another person trying to make sense of the thoughts in my head. Though through my experiences, those thoughts are far more than anything I can write down on a piece of paper. What I write is .. more..
