Meeting at the beach

Meeting at the beach

A Story by Nita Eads

Two lovers meet at the beach... (If I tell you any more it will ruin it!)

She was a good 3 inches taller than he was. But that didn’t matter today as they sat on the beach talking. They were seated on the blanket and watching the water move in and out. Her blond hair cascaded over her shoulders. She looked so at peace here. The man with brown hair seated next to her couldn’t help but smile. After everything she had been through recently, it was hard to believe that she could still smile.

He opened up his picnic basket and took out two sandwiches. “Turkey and Swiss with a little mustard?”

“Boy you pay attention.” She raised an eyebrow and took the sandwich from him. “What about drinks?”

“You like cokes, but you’re on a low sugar diet and drink water or unsweet tea.” He passed her a thermos.

“Why aren’t there more of you at home?”

“Because men like me aren’t from where you are from.” He smiled at her and started to take a bit of his sandwich. The two of them were seated there eating.

She began laughing and pointed at the ocean. “Dolphins. I have never seen dolphins before, Peter.”

He smiled at her. “I told you, you just needed to come here, Brooke.” She finished her tea and smiled at him. “What?”

            “I love it here.”

“I love you being here.” The man reached over and touched her bare knee. She giggled and took his hand. His actions made her feel like a kid again.

            “Thank you for inviting me.”

“It’s been a long time since I have seen someone like you.”

            “Someone like me?”

“Someone beautiful, Brooke.” Peter reached up and touched her cheek. The touch was warm and inviting. “Can I kiss you?”

She blushed some. “We hardly know each other.”

“I know you well enough to know that I love you.” Peter moved in with his brown eyes concentrated on her light blue ones. Softly he found her lips. He gently touched them and then his tongue slid gently into her mouth. Brooke responded to him and then put her hands around his neck. It had been a long time since someone had been interested in her like this.

When they backed up, she looked around the beach as though they were being watched. It was there that she saw his large beach home. “Can we go inside?”

“You said you liked the beach.”

“I do, but if we’re going to do this, I would rather be inside. Somewhere private.”

“Alright.” He rose and took her hand. The skirt of her sun dress flowed with the breeze as they ran up the path. Once they were inside and he shut the door, Brooke became like a different person in the house. She pushed Peter against the wall and started kissing him. Her hands worked the buttons quickly and before he could even react she had his shirt off. “Brooke?”

“Yeah?” She was between kisses on his defined chest. She dropped to her knees and, because of her height, was at his stomach.

            “Not like this.”
“What?” She looked up at him, worried she had offended him.

“I want to make love to you before you leave. I don’t want to be some fast screw in the night.”

“It’s not like that. I just know that I can’t stay long.”

“I know. But we can make time slow down.” He snapped his fingers and smiled at her reassuredly.

She giggled and felt funny suddenly. “Do you mean we have time?”

“Yes. We have a lot of time.” He picked her up and carried her into the bedroom. Then he dropped her playfully on the bed. He took her flip flops off and brushed the sand away from her dainty little feet. Then he started to remove her sweater. Once it was off, she laid there in her pale blue summer dress with its spaghetti straps. He moved slowly to her shoulder and started to kiss it and moved up her neck. “I love you, Brooke.”

“I love you too, Peter.” She got breathless, as he knew every place to touch her on her neck. She just prayed he didn’t start touching her back or she wasn’t sure she could contain herself right there.

He helped her up a little. Then he unzipped the dress and moved the straps to let it fall off her form. Then he helped her out of her clothes. “You are so beautiful, Aphrodite.”

            “Aphrodite?”

            “The goddess of love.”

“I know who she is. Why did you call me that?”

“Because I can’t explain this love I feel.”

She searched his eyes. There was a little fright in his eyes. “It’s your first time?”

            “Yes.”

“Then let me lead you, Zeus, my king. Just promise not to turn me into a cow or a peacock.”

“Agreed.” He smirked at her and held her tight. Then she began to help him out of his jeans and shorts. Once they were naked, she helped him into the bed and met with him there. They melted together like chocolates on a warm summer day. “I love you, Brooke.” He whispered as he panted. She just smiled at him and seemed to concentrate on what she was doing. Neither of them had ever been as happy and excited as they were now. Then as she began to get close and she could tell that he was getting close, she whispered. “I love you, Peter.”

When it was over, they laid in each other’s arms. He kissed her head and her face. She returned every kiss that she could. Then she felt funny again.

            “It’s started back again?”

            “I am afraid so.”

“Why us? Why now?” Her eyes were pleading.

“Because we needed each other. We are a perfect match.”

“Can I see you again?” Tears began to trickle down her face.

“I hope so.” Peter held her and kissed her lips one last time. Then she was gone.

He looked up at the sky. “I’m ready.”

A moment later he was back at the compound. He showered and dressed. Then his boss entered the room. “Nice job, Peter. You did well.”

            “Can I see her again?”

“You know better than to get involved.” His boss shook his head.

            “But…”

“She died two days after giving birth to your son.” The man said shortly and turned. Peter felt like someone had shot him through the heart. He walked over to his computer and typed in her name. Brooke Abernathy, born 1977 and died 2009. He read her biography. World famous geneticist Brooke Abernathy was credited for being the first to discover that the 13th chromosome contained most of the cancer causing genes in the human genome. Her work was carried on by her son Peter, twenty-two years after her death. He would find a cure for 90 % of the types of cancer through gene splicing without any side effects. She died after being discharged from the hospital two days after the birth of her son. Miss Abernathy was hit by a drunk driver as she cross the street.

The therapist came in and watched him. “You know you’re not allowed to look at the files of targets.”

“She was not a target. She was the mother of my child.”

The woman walked over and looked at him. “You know that we had to do this to save humanity.”

“But we could have taken her from the very moment she got hit.”
“It can’t be like that, Peter.”

“I loved her. I fell in love with her.”

“I know.” She touched his shoulder softly. “But we have to do this.”

He looked out the window of the compound. The Earth was a different place than where he had just been twenty minutes before with her. In 2361, the earth was barren and desolate. Life only functioned inside of the little self sufficient pods. Peter was part of the third generation humans that were sent ‘back in time’ to meet with potential humans and strengthen the human race and save the rest of humanity. He was one of the few that had not been tainted by the poisons that the Earth put off in retaliation for all of its years of mistreatment. Over 95% of the population, including the woman standing in the room with him, was sterile from these poisons.

“Peter, why don’t you come down to my office in an hour? I have something you should see.”

“Whatever.” He said with his arms crossed over his chest.

An hour later, Beverly was not surprised to see him standing at the door. “You have something for me to see?”

“Come in and close the door, Pete.”

He did and she handed him an envelope. “What’s this?”

“A letter that Brooke wrote you.”

            “But…”

“Read it.” She pleaded with her eyes and then walked out of the room.

Dearest Peter,

I don’t know how to get this to you, but I can only pray that the same miracle that sent you to me will make sure you get this letter. Three hours ago I gave birth to our son, the son that we made in the beach house that day. When you first contacted me, I thought you were crazy or that I was loosing it after James’ death. But over the last nine months, I realize that you were a miracle. You were there when I needed someone and when I had lost all faith in myself and humanity. I don’t know what kind of world you are from or what kind of pains you have seen. And as far as you are concerned I may have just been a job. But I have to tell you, Peter, that I loved you. I loved everything about you. If I live to be 100, I will never find another man like you. Hell, I would have to time travel 300 years into the future to find someone like you. Be safe, my love. Know that you will always be in my heart.

Love always and forever,

Brooke

He put his head down on the table and couldn’t believe what he had read. Then he looked up for Beverly, the therapist. She had just stepped back in. “How?”

“I have my sources.” She smiled. “There is a new member coming from the colony on Mars. I think you need a rest after this last mission. Why don’t you go with the transport and get her?”

            “Me?”

            “Yes, you.”

“Alright.” He grumbled and got up.

Now six hours later he was seated at the main Mars transportation Hub. It was a lot like the Atlanta Airport in the Twenty-first century with lots of terminal going all over. The attachment held and he stood there waiting on the new member. When she walked through the door, he about had a heart attack. It was Brooke.

            “Hello.” He whispered.

“You must be Peter. I’m Meredith Abernathy.” She extended her hand and he shook it.

“Welcome aboard. We need to get you settled in.” He led her to a chair to secure for take off and then took her luggage to secure it as well. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“No thank you.” She smiled at him. He took a deep breath and smiled back. Then he went to the small private office down the hall and sent an emergency communication to Beverly.

“What the hell are you thinking? This is my…” He stopped to think. “Tenth great-granddaughter.”

“No. Actually twelfth. And I talked to the other staff here. Genetically there is nothing inappropriate or immoral about it. And she is not sterile.”

            “So you’re saying…”

“We couldn’t take Brooke, but from reading her profile, Meredith is in every way like the woman you just made love to less than 24 hours ago.” She smiled a reassuring smile at him and then waved. The terminal went blank and he had to make a decision for himself.

Peter stepped out of the office and ran right into Meredith. “Hi.”

“Hi, Peter.” She smiled at him and he couldn’t help but see her face. Not Meredith’s face, but Brooke’s. Sitting on the beach laughing about dolphins. “Peter?”

            “Yeah?”

            “I want to thank you.”

“For taking your suitcase? It was nothing.”

            “For sleeping with Brooke.”

His mouth fell open. “You knew?”
She nodded her head and smiled. “Where do you think Beverly got the letter from? I know all about you and what you did. But I couldn’t be transferred until today.”

“And you’re not freaked about out by this?”

“Not it you aren’t?” Then she leaned in and kissed him.
