Downtown DecemberA Poem by James Takeo Panton
Downtown December doldrums
The sun is gone as rush hour begins
The street signals glow red, then green
Feeling like Christmas lights
Snow is white and brown along edges
Of slick, busy streets crowded with cars
People walk down sidewalks
Leaning into the gentle snowfall
Some will huddle at doors, smoking
Some will huddle at bus stops, waiting
Stores and bars glow brightly
With lights and warmth that invite
They offer refuge from the street
And urge us of the coming season
And how this time quickly draws near
With our lists still unfinished
I am oblivious and anonymous
I do not join the throngs of shoppers
The masses of commuters
I see the world, quieter
I see the world, whiter
This scene that will not be on my holiday cards
These sentiments that I will not be gift-wrapping
These memories I will not lose
