Labour Day, 2008

A Poem by James Takeo Panton

Lazy, languid, long day

Spent with paddle in green river

Silently sliding down summery waters

In quiet solitude with old friend

Paddles slowly dipping into river

Pushing forth against heavy calm

Fishes jumping, splashing near us

Green is everywhere beneath September sun

Blue thin heron stands at flow from drain

Cautiously eyeing me as I keep distance

And glide quietly by in awe

The lure of the West calls again

To roam down unknown paths and trails

Faintly remembered in distant dream

The feeling of ending, of goodbyes, of over,

And return to something that comes with autumn

And roam across the land once more

To distant winter solitude

Yet this time, I am older, wiser

And summer slips away with current

As canoe ventures to nearest shore
