Sunday night radio show
Plays old re-remembered songs
From distant ages passed, when I was young
The dial on the stereo
Transfixed on this transmission
Bringing back the memories
Of when my world was young and smaller
Do you remember 1985?
When every song had meaning?
Those familiar refrains and familiar lyrics
All come back to me again
Full of bittersweet rhythms
And tunes from long ago
I remember the awkwardness of my youth
And how it was washed away
By these ancient melodies
And how it all made sense then
(There’d be no Emo kids today
Were it not for the New Wave of my youth!)
Now, the distant transmission washes me
In flood of memory and slight despair
Remembering when the world was simpler than now
When the songs were not as repetitive
When the lyrics were full of meaning and soul
Distant transmission fades away
Just like these audio homages
They shall never leave me

Sunday when I was growing up was always the day for Q107's Psychedelic Sunday when they pulled out all the old stuff from the sixties (and I'm not talking Beach Boys and Frankie and Annette either!). They would not be afraid of spinning something rare and obscure either, like the entire track of Pink Floyd's Echoes for example. But in 1985, I was just starting to get into Wave. After watching Live Aid and seeing Bono just gently blow the rock world to bits when they played 'Bad', I began my metamorphosis from metalhead to alternative geek. I was just picking up The Smiths, Killing Joke, Sex Pistols, The Ramones and CFNY was my conduit into this world. I even have the Spirit of Radio decal on my lunchpail! I kid you not! It's so cool cos I'm trying to write a novel where half of it is set in 1985 and I have all this music in there!

James, I like that you hit on the fact that everyone has an era burned into their psyche that brings them back to that moment in your life that made you feel alive and that the choices you made were wholly your own. This poem brings that right home for me and anyone else that checks this out. As far as the pining for simpler times it's not really breaking any new ground and the poem just ends up a reminisce about some tunes and then a little whine (or maybe some tequilla). So I figer it works but it don't work. Not bad just not tortured enough I guess? Two thumbs up with one thumb just going up cuz the first thumb was so eager and he doesn't want to look like a jerk (he has failed). Keep working dude. Let me check out more of your stuff. Take care.
