Steadily MaintainA Poem by James Takeo PantonI wish to be a Buddhist monk And sit beneath a mountain
Words spring forth on quiet lips
And flow out like a fountain
I strive to be a Superman
And find my strength in me
And do my best to do my part
For everyone to see
I long to live the simple life
Meditation, day by day
Enjoy simplicity in menial tasks
Until my hair grows grey
I dream to live as a hermit
Distant and apart
Yet never far from those I love
And always close at heart
I wish to live an adventurer’s life
And explore everything I see
And only to see that everyone
Is very much like me
Yet all I see and all I know
Is full of worry and of doubt
It gives me pains to feel this way
And makes me want to shout
But I endure and carry on
And steadily maintain
And when I fall, I get back up
And try it once again
Thirty-seven years I have wandered
Yet it always seems the same
Gone and there and back again
To places I reclaim
But dreams I have, they still are there
From me, they are not gone
They are what I know, and what I am And they always carry on
