Cold Dark Night

Cold Dark Night

A Poem by James Takeo Panton

Cold, dark night comes creeping in
Chilling me beneath my skin
A frozen waste I’ve always known
A frozen place to which I am shown
And now again, do I seek or find
The hidden corners of your mind?
The secret places, where I do dwell
The tales untold that now I tell
Of those things you also know
Of all the places you must go
Do my words speak only to you
Of all the things you had to do
To feel alive, when barely there?
When no-one noticed, and no-one cared
Did an Angel or Superman come to grace
The distant gloom of your own space
And find you there, within your soul
When all the fires had burned so cold?
When no-one had seen or ever thought
And you were the one they had forgot
Or had they merely shut you out
And left you feeling full of doubt?
And all the secrets, and all the lies
And all the endless long goodbyes
Who was there now, in lonely room
That had become a lonely tomb
And all around you, all was bleak
Left you feeling mere and weak
Do I not find you, in this empty heart
And know again I must once more start
All this sacrifice, stress and frustration
That sends me across this great nation
And make it calm and warm and bright
And bring us from this cold, dark night
