The Cow and the Banana

The Cow and the Banana

A Story by Nikhil Ranka
"

This did happen to me. And I express it with all honesty.

"
The other day, I was seated on the footpath smoking a cigarette, when I noticed this cow, with its big black eyes, tiny unkempt hair in between her horns and a look of dazed uncertainty that all cows possess. I watched her watch me as I smoked my cigarette, and at the last puff, it occurred to me that she was hungry, I must buy her a banana. So, I rose from the footpath and bought two bananas; one for her and one for me. I gave her her banana, without peeling it, for she’s a cow and cows like their banana with the peel. She ate it without complaining, seemed unchanged and continued watching me with her big black eyes and her look of dazed uncertainty. I thought she wanted the other banana also. So, I tried to give it to her, but she didn’t take it. I tried again, she moved her face away, but still stood there. “She’s a cow and being a cow,” I thought to myself and ate the banana. She was still watching. But, now I only had the peel in my hand and the fruit was in my tummy. I thought to myself: “She’s bloody obsessed. Perhaps, it’s the black sweatshirt I’m wearing. Perhaps, she thinks I’m a skinny cow and wants to nourish me with her milk.” Then I observed, harder, and noticed that she’s watching the peel in my hand. So, I gave it to her and she ate it. Blew my bloody mind away!
It was like she knew, that that banana was meant for me, not her. So, she refused to eat it. But didn’t refuse to eat the peel. I can make several interpretations of this and I did. Care to share yours?
