‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’

Beauty is subjective but there’s no doubt that certain qualities make a person more beautiful than another. Beautiful people have more money, are more successful, get more attention, and have a better chance of falling in love. Well at least that’s what it looks like on the outside of the circle. People look up to those more beautiful then them and either want to be them or want to be friends with them. Now this is not everyone and the people that are completely comfortable with them selves are the real people to be jealous of. But this is not for them. This is for all the people that wish they could be a little taller, a little thinner, a little more beautiful.

You’re not missing out. The popularity is superficial, the relationships are questionable, and the feelings are miserable.

You think if you were more beautiful you would be popular? What does that get you, fake friends and forced conversations? Here is how it is, the attention is nice til you realize you have no body you can trust and other than getting drunk with a bunch of other teenagers there’s nothing really that special. So people know your name other than your mom and your old best friend? You’ll drive your self absolutely insane wondering if its good or bad. You’ll watch what you say and what you do and before you know it you’re a clone of everyone else around you. Is that what you really want, a few moments of glory to trade your individuality? Yeah, no thank you.

You think if you were more beautiful you would have a boyfriend? You should envy people less beautiful than you. Because you know that when they find someone that person loves them for who they are; their content not their appearance. Beauty will make you question if your relationships are intimate or artificial. Make you go mad with curiosity, because while trying to figure it out your falling madly in love with someone who could possibly just have picked you for your shiny hair and bright blue eyes. Now I would like to believe society is a little bit better than that but you have no idea how hard it is to know the difference between if someone is proud to be with you or your face. There is someone out there for everyone. And if you’re looking for the hottest guy out there then you are going to wait and wait and miss out on someone who you could have potentially really loved. So if you have to wear your best make up, your sexiest clothes, your most flawless curls because you think it will make a boy like you, you’re just hurting yourself in the long run. Because you will get a boy, one who just wants you for your mien, and while he leaves with what he wanted, you’ll be left with runny makeup, messy clothes, and imperfect hair wondering what you did wrong.

You think being beautiful will make you feel better, will bring you brighter days? That couldn’t be more wrong. There’s a type of addiction to beauty. Everyone strives for perfection and being natural just isn’t good enough anymore. So while you might first start to believe a little mascara will make your eyes pop it suddenly isn’t enough and eyeliner with a little wing now just is the perfect touch to what you need. But it is not. Your face is uneven colors so maybe a little bit of powder will even it out. But once again it doesn’t do the job for long and next thing you know you spend hours with every type of makeup you can think of making yourself look less and less like the real you and more like what ever celebrity was on the front cover of this months Vanity. Finally you’re beautiful now right? But wait the way that tight shirt fits around your waist is just a little too snug, so maybe skip the mash potatoes at dinner? Well that’s not enough, soon its meals. When not eating for days leaves you tired and cranky you’ll realize you need food. Out of pure hunger you begin to stuff your face in anything you can get your hands on. Afterwards though you look in the mirror and realize you’re still not as thin as the other girls. Regret will fill you up but no need to regret when you can just make it all come up again like it never happened. Ahh that’s better right? No it’s not. It’s a never-ending cycle that breaking free from is practically impossible. So what are you left with? Synthetic beauty and self-esteem issues that haunt you like a ghost with a vengeance.

So you strive to be beautiful? Don’t. Take it from someone who has tried to live through it.
