Chapter Nine: RoseA Chapter by Locke Redwyne (night sys)Calypsa Rosemarie Swindlehurst May 20th Pluto 27“Do you realize why you have been selected for this task?” The voice inside the handheld communication device is scrambled beyond recognition, with static crackling through it. “Not exactly, sir.” I know it’s a ‘sir’, women don’t have this low of voices. “You have been chosen for this mission because of your powers,” he deadpans. I jerk my head up in surprise, looking around the dingy alleyway to see if anyone heard. Even in a half-abandon town like this one, there’s almost always someone listening. “My… powers, sir?” I try to feign confusion, but it doesn’t work. I know that as soon as the words leave my mouth. “Yes. Your enhanced jumping abilities and space-time manipulation, those powers,” the voice says impatiently. “The Target List has been sent to your MissionPad, and what to do with each target. Understood?” “Yes, sir.” “Good. This will now self-destruct in 10… 9… 8…” I curse as the countdown continues, then lob the device as far as I can. It explodes somewhere off in the distance, demolishing a building. I take out my MissionPad to look at the Target List.
I look the list over again. I’m supposed to capture and deliver twelve people, that’s a typical job, but this time, I’m actually supposed to kill someone? I’m rarely ever asked to kill people, my employers must know that I charge extra for it. I don’t particularly like killing people, it’s just part of the job, I guess. Pocketing my MissionPad, I switch on my booster-boots, which propels me about a hundred feet up in the air before I regain control. Finally, I zip off towards the space station. When I reach it, however, it’s swarming with… Galaxy Guards! The GG’s are singular the the 27th Dimension, my Dimension, because they can’t control space-time, but there isn’t much else they couldn’t do… except find the outpost. Until now. I turn and flee, zipping quickly back into the city ruins. I need to find a safe place to switch to Dimension 4, where my first three targets are waiting. I reach the top of a hill, hidden in trees, which I know is also deserted in Pluto 4. I concentrate, gathering my meager space-time powers, and make the jump. After a stretching sensation, I end up standing on the same hill, but on Pluto 4. And the city around me is in chaos. © 2018 Locke Redwyne (night sys)Reviews
