Like Swimming

Like Swimming

A Poem by Elizabeth

I want to feel you sliding over me again.
Your cool touch is the antidote
to a day so bright it hurts me.
But this evening you are occupied
with several other women.
You glide between them while I
watch from a distance, seething
at their laughter.
I think you know
you look amazing in that shade of blue.
The women think so too.
Don't they know you're mine?
If they had seen us together last night
they'd gather their things
and file sheepishly out the door.
If I wait long enough
they'll go.
In the dark they fear you
just a little,
but that's when I love you best.
Even though you seem dirty
after they've gone,
as you beckon me
your face clean and innocent
as though you've never been touched.
I know better, but I can't resist you,
the way you take me
down and down
so deep I think I'll never rise,
I'll be part of you forever,
but you always lift me
and I emerge,gasping, surfacing.
