I Remember

I Remember

A Poem by Scarlett

Falling leaves in late October,

I remember,

Falling under.

Swinging high above the fence,

I remember,

Gazing upward.

My older sister, tall and proud,

I remember,

Falling down.

Then there was me-

Glossy staircase below my socks,

I remember,

Them reaching up.

I remember,

My father’s footsteps.

I remember,

My mother’s tone.

I remember,

Headlights flashing by.

I remember,

A tugging on my forehead.

I don’t remember,

Any pain.

Sifting through the faded memories,

I don’t remember,

Any faces.

Reaching for a distant clue,

I don’t remember,

Any names.

Though holding still for just a moment,

I remember,

The wind playing in my hair,

Clouds drifting lazily overhead,

The sun burning the skin on my nose,

Plastic stinging the backs of my legs,

I remember,

Two soft voices,

I remember,

One was not mine,

I remember,

Soft lips for the first time.
