It's Rainin' Out Here on the Deep Blue SeaA Story by Nick TNature can be Cruel The storm raged on, the waves crashed on,
the thunder clapped overhead, the wind howled and thrashed against the sails
trying to tear them from the mast. The rain blinded my sight, I wiped my eyes,
but my drenched hair took the rains place, futile, I ignored my vision, the
clouds already blacked out the sun, sight was a pointless endeavor. I grabbed
for the ropes, a conglomerated mass of knots found my hands. The boat lurched
to starboard, I grabbed hold, my full might gripping the side of the boat. The
lightning was the only thing that could pierce the vast darkness, blinding,
white, powerful. The boat lurched again, I hung on. My grip never ceased. "Take
my hand!" I heard shouted through the veil, I thought he fell out, I
thought I lost him. I grabbed out into the darkness, and another hand met mine,
I could not reel him in, the boat lurched and he pulled me into the vast depth
of water below. The rain was falling down so torrentially, I felt I just
slipped from one body of water to another, the only difference was I could not
breathe in this one. I kicked and thrashed as hard as I could, and finally my
head reached the surface. I gulped air almost as fast as I gulped water. I
choked and thrashed attempting to stay afloat. I felt the side of the boat, I
grabbed hold, and calmed my thrashing body, I must conserve energy, focus on
breathing, not drowning. My companion loomed in the boat above, revealed by the
hot, white lightning. "On
three I'll shove you back up and in!" Another cry from the outside world,
it took me a couple of seconds to realize what he meant, then I braced myself.
With the combined power, I was launched back into our vessel. Another wave
crashed overhead, nearly knocking me back in, but I held fast, tighter than
before. I turned, suddenly remembering my friend, as I turned to face the vast
sea again, my heart launched into my throat, I could not see him, just more and
more water. So much water. I looked up and realized with terror what had
happened, the wave tore him from the ship, he was meters, so many hopeless
meters away from my craft, I panicked, I looked around in vain. My hands became
numb as my grip continued to cling to the boat. I found him! He was too far to
reach, I scrambled for some rope to throw to him, but it was all too late, soon
another wave tore him from my vision. Lost. My shoulders dropped, the storm
lashed out, my tears met with the rain. All lost. My whimper could not pierce
the sound of the furious storm that raged on outside, I was lost within the
vastness around me. All is lost. The ocean had swallowed him whole, one gulp, I
stopped whimpering and started shouting, shouting as fiercely as I could.
Nothing could tame my rage, just like nothing could tame the oceans rage, our
fury met, and I lost. All is lost out here on the deep blue sea. © 2015 Nick T |
