Masquerade

Hope you like it :) It was inspired by a song i was listening to:)

Is that the person you want people to see?

You hide behind a mask to shield the real you.

Are you afraid to show everyone what you have become?

Your eyes peek out only to see more eyes staring back.

Whats under the mask? Human or monster?

You protect your lies in hopes no one sees right through you.

Heartless, selfish, helpless and all alone.

Nothing left but empty darkness.

Is that the person you want people to see?

The devil in disguise; so cold. 

Why break what's already broken?

Beat down and bruised seeing less than zero.

Behind that mask trying to breath.

Yet, starting to choke with every lie your lips make.

Been years since you've seen your face,

Like a soul lost without a trace. 

Its a shame no one sees you for what you are.

Angel with a pretty face. 

Just a whisper that cant be too loud.

A mystery beneath a woven mask.

Your true identity is better kept secret.

I loved the repetition of the line "Is that the person you want people to see?" I feel like everyone wears a mask at some point and sometimes people lose themselves so deeply, they can't ever take it off. So I feel like that line is something people need to ask themselves more often.

This poem is very insightful to the person (or monster) behind the "mask". So many times people put up a face and say that everything is okay when it is most definitely not. They are afraid to show how broken they are underneath. Great poem!

Most people rarely show their real self. Easy to pretend to be someone else then to stand for the right. I like the way you made your point in this poem. Allow the reader to feel the desire and the emotion of this poem. Thank you for the excellent poem.

I think we all hide behind a mask because we are too afraid of what people may say or think of the reality we hold inside ourselves without being judged. Or for some of us we hide our real selves by lashing out and being almost "a devil in disguise". Nicely done, well written and thoughtprovoking write.

This is great work Amanda. Not only does it apply to our "real" worlds but with so many on the net it is a mask very easily worn.. Not always for bad reasons but still a mask.. I polish mine with kisses ;) x
