Color shouldn't make a difference

Color shouldn't make a difference

A Poem by MandaBear
"

Just something I came up with while watching something on the History Channel.

"
Is it the color of my skin that makes me different?
If you prick me; do I not bleed?
If you tell a joke; do I not laugh?
If you hurt me; do I not fight back?

Why do you treat me different?
I am just the same as you and yet I am not.
I am put on a lower level than you.
I am put in a world of my own so I do not touch yours.

I am told I cannot go somewhere simply because of my skin.
I am told I cannot eat that because of where I am from.
I am simply told I cannot do because of what I look like.
Is it the color of my skin that makes me different?

Why do some get to do what I am not?
Is it because they are the same as you?
Is it because they know as much as you?
Is it because they are white?

If you ask me to move; do I not let you pass?
If you give me something to eat; do I not eat it?
If you let me borrow your shirt; do I not wear it?
Is it the color of my skin that makes me different?

I should not be judged based on my color.
My actions should speak for my character.
My worth is not based on the color of my skin.
Why should the color of skin make us different?

Good and evil pay no lip service to the colour of one's skin.

To make judgement in such a way is mankind's greatest folly.

Now this stanza:
Is it the color of my skin that makes me different?
If you prick me; do I not bleed?
If you tell a joke; do I not laugh?
If you hurt me; do I not fight back?

Is very familiar... I don't know, but I seem to have read almost the same lines...

But anyway, the poem is powerful.. the meaning is stated with clarity, no tagging or playing on ideals, I like it. Strong and straight to the point.

take a brown egg and a white egg. compare them. are they different? now, crack them both open side by side and look at them closely. you now see their true innards, what they really are. if, now, you still see two different eggs...then the yolks on you. excellent write!

So true and wonderfully put. I love the strength of your message and the empathy in your words as well.

I agree with the poem. Actions and deeds should make the man or woman. Racism is because of fear of something not understood. A powerful poem with a good message. Thank you for the excellent poem.
