James Buchanan (President #15) (1857-1861)

James Buchanan (President #15) (1857-1861)

A Chapter by MandaBear
"

Fifteenth President of the United States of America

"
James Buchanan was number 15.
He was born Pennsylvania the only president to be born there.
He was the only bachelor president.
His vice president was also the only bachelor vice president.

James Buchanan had some bad luck just as Franklin Pierce had.
James Buchanan urged congress to accept Kansas as a slave state.
Kansas strongly rejected slavery many felt Buchanan had tried to sneak Kansas in as a slave state over the wishes  of people living there.
Something tells me he wasn't popular with Kansas.

James Buchanan had more trouble to came.
Dred Scott sued for his freedom because he had lived in free territory.
The court ruled that enslaved people were property not citizens .
James Buchanan urged the nation to support what the court said. Northerners were not happy. Go figure huh?

Although James Buchanan disliked slavery(he even bought slaves in order to free them)
He stood by the ruling. He hated breaking rules more.
Dislikes slavery yet has the nation to support slavery.
Kind of a double standard huh?

The trouble doesn't stop there and I thought Franklin Pierce was unlucky.
In 1861 James Buchanan left office with the nation on the edge of war.
7 states left the union South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,Alabama,Georgia,Louisiana, and Texas.
By the end of the year 11 states seceded from the union.

James Buchanan did have some good points in his life.
He severed Andrew Jackson in Russia and Franklin Pierce in Britain as a diplomat.
He also had the Prince of Wales stay at the white house while he slept on the couch.
He was farsighted in one eye and nearsighted in the other. I guess you could say he was able to see both sides of the argument.

This is James Buchanan "Old Buck" as he was called.
 A president with many troubles.
Just as unlucky as the president before.
At least he could see all sides of the situation even if he couldn't solve it.

Been looking forawrd to this chapter. Did you know I'm relateds to James Buchanon on my dad's mom's side? Yeah, he's like my great-times-twenty uncle twice removed or something. The eyesight problem definately runs in the family. Even though I'm related to him, I've never been a big fan of him. I read about that case in my history textbook. I was looking to see if I could find James Buchanon in there, and I ended up reading ahead of the class (call me a nerd all you want).
