An Average Night

An Average Night

A Poem by nickchidiac

It’s a Wednesday night

And I expectedly find myself sitting in a car

Making pointless conversations

With the closest thing I have to a companion

Talking of our sadly minute sexual triumphs.

In between the most random quotes of our dialogue

We stare

And wonder

About dozens of careless patrons

As this car is parked outside of a gas station,

Symbolically named ‘Square One’.

Two cars sit to our left

And as the operators shake hands and part ways,

We mock their infant drug deal

And scoff at the dressing patterns

Of the modern students of our former high school.

We read to each other the words of a poetic story teller

From our ash-covered laps.

As we choke our lungs

With paper-coated sticks of poison,

We drown our emptiness

In the juice we paid for in silver and copper.

With a spark of his lighter

And a drag of his cigarette

He looks at me and asks

“Is this what our life is?”

Not yet.

This was lovely and bought back a million memories of long lost nights that I would probably rather forget, haha. Lovely imagery though.

It is Ok to be young and time to waste. I wish I could get a cigar and beer. Sit with friends and laugh at the world for a moment. A very good story. Thank you.

Observation seems to be a great thing for you lol Awesome description in this poem:) Anticipation, lingering, dwelling on issues that render us to seek depths!
Wonderful poem

Great poem of boring life!

You seem to be a fan of free verse, random form poetry and it suits you.
As a result, there is nothing to criticize in terms of form.

I like how you say it's "just another boring night". The story telling is quite good. Some very descriptive passages. You make the monotonous and the mundane seem filled with life (though it's not much of a life).

Well done.
