Running on empty - this came across to me as the feelings of a man/woman had just broke some devasting news to the other half. The one breaking the news was cold and callous,whilst the person on the receiving end was left heartbroken. Whilst being a very short piece, the specific and constant use of the word 'empty' really crashed home as to how the broken hearted one felt. It's true that words have power - When used in the correct context, the word 'empty' can be very powerful.
