Mum of five leaves secure job to take on glamorous world of fashion at 50A Story by liker
Against the odds, the 50-year-old mother of five has made a career transition
look effortless, coming out on top after a bold move five years ago.
Ms Saccasan left her job as an image consultant in an attempt to break into the glamorous but cutthroat world of fashion. “Designing clothes was what I really wanted to do,” she said. Ms Saccasan studied part-time and full-time for five years towards a Bachelor of Design, majoring in fashion at the Raffles College of Commerce and Design. The budding designer’s style is elegance and dignity mixed in with glamour, and she wanted to cater fashion to older women, a gap she had noticed in the industry. “Once you hit 40, you are expected to dress like you are 20 or 80.” Ms Saccasan will feature in the college’s Graduate Showcase, held at the Big Top Luna Park this Tuesday. An event which is know for attracting some of the most influential designers, industry, media, influencers and bloggers. Ms Saccasan will present five pieces, but couldn’t choose a favourite as she loved every one of the designs that she had put so much work into, she said. “For the last three weeks, midnight has been my bed time with another couple of weeks to go,” she said. The Showcase gave students the chance to put their hard work on display, and potentially get their name out there, Ms Saccasan said. After the show, she will go on to do an internship but had not applied for any yet. Designers like Josh Goot, Akira and Orton appealed to her though.
