Ariana Grande leads the performances at MTV EMAs 2014… as she soars over the crowd in a sexy silver

She’s the diminutive star with the larger-than-life voice and on Sunday evening Ariana Grande left a lasting impression.

Opening the show for the MTV European Music Awards at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow the popstar - who was nominated for a whopping six awards and walked away with two - kicked off the night with gusto.

The Florida-born singer stunned in a sexy glowing silver leotard with a peplum waistline, black knee-high boots, long hair extensions and a simple gold pendant.

She wore a slick of muted pink on her lips, a subtle bronze shadow on her eyelids and white nail polish.

Emerging from a cloud of smoke Ariana, who is dating Big Sean, sung her hit track Problem before busting into her slower single Break Free.

Later she flew over the crowd in a large white chair, seemingly unphased by being suspended in such extreme heights.

Before she could even catch her breath, Ariana was summoned back on stage by host Nicki Minaj for the Best Song gong, for her hit Problem with Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.

'Thank you so much. I was just on stage one second ago. This has been a really crazy year. Last year I was presenting with Iggy... and I can’t tell you how thankful I am,' the 21-year-old gushed as she tried to catch her breath.

'I'm excited. I'm very happy. This is my first one of these. My brother will probably take it from me and put it in his apartment,' she added.

Earlier in the evening, the former Nickelodeon actress walked the red carpet and revealed her new hairstyle made her feel 'naked'.

'My hair's down and I feel so naked like that,' she admitted, adding that she was looking forward to seeing Nicki Minaj host the bash.

Earlier in the evening, Ariana had posed on the red carpet in a cleavage-baring cut-out black dress that clung to her petite frame.

And, according to The Mirror, the star acted like a bit of a diva as she reportedly demanded that she only have her picture taken from her 'best side'; the left.

A source told the paper: 'Snappers were strictly told that they were only allowed to take photographs of her when she posed for them.

'A flunky went along the row and said that she could only be shot from directly in front, allowing her to perfect her stance.'

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Ariana Grande for comment.

Next up was 25-year-old Kiesza, who stunned in a black bralet and high-waisted sparkly trousers for her serving of smash hit Hideaway.

Charli XCX, 22, strutted her stuff in a tight, plunging latex jumpsuit during her performance of Boom Clap and Break The Rules.

Following the incredible sets from the talented solo female artists, Irish crooners U2 sung a stripped down version of Every Breaking Wave.

It’s the fourth time the veteran act have performed at the event, having last rocked out in Berlin in 2009.

Shaking off the recent Apple controversy " after their latest album Songs Of Innocence automatically infiltrated user’s iTunes account " the band looked debonair and ready to impresses.

Last month lead man Bono apologised over the scandal during a Q&A session with FaceBook.

‘I had this beautiful idea and we got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing,’ the 54-year-old explained.

Adding the move was ‘A drop of megalomania, a touch of generosity, a dash of self-promotion and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn't be heard.’

‘There's a lot of noise out there. I guess we got a little noisy ourselves to get through it.’

Despite the drama Songs Of Innocence managed to hit the top 10 in the album charts.

The lads were followed by Nicki Minaj, who rocked a sheer black bodysuit as she belted out Super Bass and Anaconda.

Clearly chuffed to be hosting the show Nicki, 31, boasted her show would be one for the history books.

‘Everything I do I’m remembered. Are you kidding me? You know damn well they are going to remember Nicki Minaj hosting the show,' she bragged.

Although it was a huge coup for Nicki to land the coveted hosting role, Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne, 65, confessed to the MailOnline on the red carpet he’d never heard of the Starships hitmaker.

It was a more chilled out vibe from Ed Sheeran, who looked dapper in a black tie and vest combo which he teamed with a pair of Air Jordan trainers.

As ever, the 23-year-old flame-haired crooner was armed with his guitar and charmed the crowd with his track Thinking Out Loud.

The pace was stepped up a notch for Enrique Iglesias' I'm A Freak. The 39-year-old danced about the stage in an unbuttoned red shirt as strobe lights shot about.

Later the Hero hitmaker brought his trademark Spanish touch and had the crowds waving their hands from side-to-side with Bailando.

Enrique, who won the Best World Stage award, boasts a successful past of EMA accolades, scoring Best Spanish Act in 2010.

Meanwhile a glowing and pregnant Alicia Keys stunned the crowd with her spine-tingling performance of her latest track We Are Here.

The 33-year-old showed off her blossoming bump in a floor-length white glittery gown, while her locks looked edgy in a mowhawk style 'do.

Ahead of the night she told MTV: ‘I am crazy excited to perform on the global stage of the EMA, and for my song to be nominated for Best Song with a Message.’

‘We Are Here’ is a 21st century peace movement that believes if we all stand together and join our voices we CAN create a kinder world for everyone,' she mused.

Teasing fans before the show the mother-of-one tweeted: ‘Shhhh secret show..... #MTVEMAs #inGlasgow.’

Guns 'N Roses star Slash,49, and Alter Bridge guitarist Myles Kennedy, 44, closed the night with a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's Crazy Train.
