To Eternity

To Eternity

A Story by Nica

I carefully fiddle with my necktie that, I feel like, has been suffocating me for pretty much an hour now. I can feel cold sweat running down from my forehead to my chin. The tension in the air meddling with the difficulty of my breathing is killing me. Almost. What now? I heaved a deep sigh, patiently waiting for my soon to be queen to appear in front of me. It’ll be magical just like every second when I am with her. Finally. The crew, my own hired crew, is hiding behind any edifice that can sprawl their heights. I have prepared for this. And the triumph of this operation is in the hands of - here she is!

It was like all in slow motion, how the pretty lass opened the glass door that has been waiting for her contact for so long, how the young man in coat and tie gaped at his lady, and how the crew, who has been wanting all of this to start, gawped at this breathtaking scene. And they’ll actually be a part of it. The young lass, the star of the night, gradually took her steps of the stairs. And then it all began.

The fireworks began to fly above them, and then explode in just the perfect timing, and then it formed several shapes that the lass thought was amazing and subtly wonderful. The music rashly erupted and seemed like it has been given by the gods. It was magnificent and glorious. The crew was on their feet in no time, they started to move, dancing around, waving colorful banners that fly in the midair so smoothly. The scene was perfect. It was beyond amazing. Nothing near run of the mill.

But then again, it all comes down to the lass that is now at the foot of the marble staircase. Hot tears welled her eyes, then she asked, “What’s the meaning of this?” The man held her hands. “It's perfect, isn’t?” the lass abruptly nodded her head. “Nothing will be more perfect, don’t you think?” again, the lass nodded her head.

“You’re wrong,” the man said. “This is nothing. Nothing compared to the times I’ve been with you. To your smile, to your tears, to your scent, to your touch, to your heart… nothing compared to you.” The lass smiled, the man thinks it's the most beautiful smile he has ever seen. “But then,” he continued, slowly getting down on one knee. “It will be more wonderful if all of these things will be accompanied by your yes.” The lass couldn’t say anything, her tears pouring down like a waterfall. “So, my love, will you marry me?”

The night ended as the most wonderful closing of the caught up’s hours of darkness.
