A loose tileA Story by Keith CharlesA work experienceA loose tile?
He had to bring down the old heavy clay tiles from the roof.
It was four floors up.
That was a lot of up and down with a hod over his shoulder.
He found a barrel and tied it to the end of a rope.
He climbed up the scaffold with the rope and put it through a pulley.
He came down and hoisted the empty barrel up to the roof and tied the rope to a tree.
He climbed up and filled the barrel with roof tiles
He went down and tried to untie the rope.
The weight of the barrel made this very difficult.
At last it came free and the barrel began to fall at great speed.
He should have let go of the rope but instinct made him hold on for dear life.
The barrel full of tiles was heavier than he was.

With his head.
It almost made him let go but he held on until he reached the top.
His fingers jammed in the pulley.
The barrel hit the ground and half the roof tiles fell out.
He was now heavier than the barrel.
Half way down he met the barrel coming up.
With his knees.
It almost made him let go but he held on and fell heavily on the spilled tiles.
This made him let go of the rope.
And the barrel which now had nothing to stop it falling……
