The Lost SoulsA Story by Alexis“Anna! Please pay attention.” The teacher slapped her ruler on my desk. I flinched. At the sudden movement. “Don’t do that! You scared me.” I shouted at her. “That’s the whole point Anna, pay attention. “ I stared at the front of the room glaring at my teacher. At some point in class I dropped my head to the desk. The hot tears started falling, dampening my arm. I was sick and tired of my parent’s abusive ways and my heart was starting to break. The deafening bell rang for class to end. “Anna, go home. Wake up.” Mrs. Jane shook me. “I don’t want to go.” I rolled my eyes and shook her hand off. “Why?” “I don’t want to talk about it.” I jumped up and ran out of the small classroom. I ran towards the nearest door. I shoved them open, everyone staring at me. A rush of cold air hit my face, stinging the once hot tears. I marched through the 2 foot of snow. It was a 5-mile walk home through the snow. Mom didn’t bother to ever pick me up from school, she didn’t care. I didn’t care either, I had some alone time away from it all. As I trudged through the snow people started staring. I didn’t like that. I started to run home only to be tripped by a patch of ice under the snow. I fell face first into the snow. Limping, I slowly got up and ran again. I slammed the front door shut to the house and trudged up the stairs. NO! Wrong turn I was in Mom’s room. That was the biggest mistake in the house. It wasn’t my territory. “GET OUT! You little brat!” She hit me hard as she shoved me against the hallway wall. “NEVER! Do that again.” Her arm, thick and muscular, jerked out from under me. “I’m tired of this.” I shouted and ran before she could take the advantage and strike again. When night came I packed a duffle bag with clothes and food and water and set it in my closet. I was waiting until midnight to sneak out. They would be sleeping then, hopefully, I could pass by without being noticed. I waited for another two hours, tossing a ball against the wall. The clock taunted me. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Finally it struck midnight. I jumped out of bed carful not to be too loud, and grabbed my duffle bag out of the closet. I flicked the lights off and opened the door as quietly as I could. It still squeaked. I shoved on several pairs of thick clothes and took one last look at the house I grew up in. Who cares I’m leaving this place. I ran out to the barn to grab Saber my white Arabian horse. He was waiting for me at his door. I grabbed his tack and got him ready. I through carrots and feed in a bag and trough it over the back of the saddle. I lead him out into the crisp Colorado air. The bright full moon Shining high in the pitch-black sky. I lead Saber for the next mile; soaking up to my ankles while the snow still fell. I stopped him under the old willow tree and rested for a while. I jumped on his back after a while and rode on. A blizzard was coming soon by the looks of it. I knew And I was right. The storm hit the next day. The cold wind biting my every nerve. I was struggling to move on. Then, I saw it. A gleaming patch of ice in front of us. I was too late to act. I felt like my world was falling. I was stuck under Saber and seconds away from blacking out. My last vision of Saber was of him looking at me with those bright blue eyes with all the trust in the world. “Saber.” I meant to scream but it only came out as a whisper. Lights flashed around me. Two paramedics loaded me into the ambulance. They rushed around the tiny room. One of them was busy trying to calm the heavy flow of blood down my leg. Warmth passed through it. “Saber.” I whispered watching him fade through the window. “It’s alright just breathe. He put a mask on me. “She’s loosing to much blood. Step on it NOW!” He yelled toward the driver. I felt the vibrating through the truck as it speed up. There was an 80-mile distance between here and the nearest hospital. Halfway through the drive I started to loose track of time. My head was swirling with visions of Saber. The only thing that mattered in this world to me was Saber. And I started to fade away with them. Memories past through my mind. A white horse stood in front of me scared and cut up. The colt’s wild eyes bright with fear. His nostrils flared as he took several steps toward me.
It felt as if I were flying through a cloud. Sabers white mane blowing on my face. Jumping a 4ft chicken coop on the course. There was clapping behind me. A complete stranger, watching me. I had just completed a long gallop through the field. “How much you want,” he asked strangely “He’s not for sale” I say “He is now” he reached out for saber, but he was too late. We ran to the river and I fall. I stare into Sabers blue eyes. He noses me and licks me. He trusts me. “Breathe.” The paramedics whispered. “Breathe.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ It was white. All white. A glowing mist of brightness. A neigh came from the distance. A white horse appeared through the mist. Saber. I ran to him. I hugged him close and cried. I cried and cried. And I know we both didn’t make it. And I know this was all my fault. But, I realize, He’ll forgive me. After all, he always does. © 2013 AlexisReviews
