Dangers of dichotomous decisionsA Story by neurostar burnsDecisions indicate a thought process of resolving. At times the resort to contrasting or comparing can help bring out elements or focus on a topic. It can be part of an analytic approach toward resolution. Dichotomous thinking can be useful for bringing about resolution but if too readily resorted to they can produced a sense of polarization instead if resolve. It need not become the case where its utilization becomes the resolution. If polarization develops, it means that there are gaps that are widening between the points being considered. In literature and expression, this takes the form: "either/or" versus "and/both". A worsening can have a solidification of views, unbreachable calcification of viewpoints plus the middle reasoning for negotiation may be abandoned. If this becomes too commonplace then it will become a format for a pattern rather than part of an option of the process toward decision making And if it becomes too prevalent in making decisions then it becomes accustomed to and is automatically tapped when a topic is addressed. It is well demonstrated that dichotomous approaches are used, e.g. for argument, debate, etc. The danger is by its form, that it is divisive and polarizing, and polarized factions tend to contend with each other more often than not based from dichotomous reasons. This is a prevalent behavior which when taken to extremes can augment aggressiveness, and even violence because it is taken not as a means to an end but is treated as the end
