Why robots cannot be human companionsA Story by neurostar burnsRobots or robotics, etc. may indeed be scheduled and programmed to do everything a human can do, except be a long term companion for the following reasons: 1) Robotics can only operate with what is presently, and currently before them. They are programmed to execute via analysis of data. The processing of information will be different. With a human, they won't be able to reminiscence on topics from veridical experience chronology in the world, nor as readily convey a running story without having to assemble fragments of data bits They might not understand nuance of histories, backstories, reverie and the like that give depth to conversation or relate as we relate to a past or subsequent developments, which in turn leads to- 2) A robot cannot relate, in conversation with a human, to past events. It cannot know because it works with what is presently before it. It has no history like a human has (unless a past is arbitrarily programmed into it). It cannot relate in sharing an older event like humans can because it does not have any innate background or childhood memory to relate events, like first steps, first sight, first grade experiences, parents, experiencing pets or nature, learning techniques or disciplinary action, etc. while growing up. No organic sense of history or relation with development. It has no history to refer back to for conversation with humans, only current happenings and responses, quite limited for any long term companionable conversation would want. Offers no personable relationship with much depth.
