American Democracy and Native AmericansA Story by neurostar burnsIn the 1600's the various european colonists were very busy trying to organize their establishments in the northeast, and survive winters, hardship. They had to communicate with native states and negotiate. They had noted that in the northeast some tribes were very well organized and worked as a confederacy. The northeast colonists needed to organize their society and structure it. They took some example of the organized Iroquois confederacy, Haudensaunee. Which coordinated several nations together (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Tuscarora), usually under one elected chief to live together in a democracy with legislature at Onagonda Lake near Syracuse, New York. This came about from a treatise of 1150 C. E., the Grand Council of Chiefs from the Song of Hiawatha that is handed down. The calling together of people in the western hemisphere can be traced back to 2500 B.C.E. down in Peru. Eventually, the colonists incorporated some of the systems of the Confederacy and later some of it was utilized as models of democracy which shaped the colonies' structure after the American Revolution through its legislators. Even some state governments of the northeast still reflect even stronger influence of the Iroquois Confederacy. The U.S. Senate passed a resolution in 1888 acknowledging the influence of the Iroquois on developing democracy including electing the Chief of chiefs (president) which is not of a permanent person, and with three branches of governance, and should be for the people by the people. However, Andrew Jackson later seemed to engage a different perspective implying the native populations were not capable of developing a sophisticated governing system. Otherwise, the majority of colonists only had distant European monarchism to fall back on from across the Atlantic Ocean. note: material herein is not necessarily a reflection of entropy of current societies.
