![]() Smarts over fight and flightA Story by neurostar burnsThe honor of fight or flight may have had its sunset a long time ago. Our "civilized" societies may have outgrown that response some time ago and we did learn to live more together rather than raw actions like fight or flight only. Recent reconsideration of how behavior and evolutionary behavior are taking another look at today versus yester year. Raw response provided action indeed but it did not promote reflection, reasoning and evaluation, only reactions. There is, as mentioned, another look with many facets by some including a genetic based experiment started with Belyaev in 1959 and the subsequent outcomes, e.g. Steven Churchill. It dwells on change noted in physical features as well as behavior changes. It is noted over time that there are changes physically and in behavior and is believed to have progressed over many, many thousands of years. Some have suggested with people living together closely in groups and learning more cooperation, this eased the anxiety of external threats. Better living conditions allowed more time for thoughtful considerations and undertakings, possibly including some who could domesticate wildlife. Some have suggested the coarser behavior may have reduced in temperate or warmer climates and environments. With reduction of need to resort to coarser behavior over thousands of years, such genes that promote that behavior are replicated less and become recessive. However, the process alluded to may seem arduous. There may be a feature while included with the considered processes may have marked even a faster development for change from raw response and fight and flight. It can come from change in the brain itself. Being that the brain leads in initiating activity, if pause for reflection is a clue, then the slowing of brain waves could be a distinct lead. To be able to pause, assess and evaluate with less harried preoccupation of mind and energy. Slowing of some brain waves may augment for reflection and accrue experience which may be beneficially developed. What may bring this about? A feature simply of the brain that could provide and sustain such a pause would come from a slowing of the Hz theta frequency. Which could be a more immediate effect than waiting for an evolutionary culmination.
