The Man In The Closet

The Man In The Closet

A Story by hailey oswald

Ever since Mary was a girl, she always felt like she was being followed. Everywhere. From the store to the woods in her backyard. "Do you ever feel like you're being followed? Like you can't see the person but you know they're there?" Mary asked her friends, Sally, Faith, and Madie. "Sure! I always feel like a really hot guy watches me walk into the store from the parking lot!" Faith said and they all burst out into laughter. Ever since Mary's friends laughed at her confession, she dared not say a word to anyone about it. For she thought she was finally going insane and belonged in an asylum. When Mary aged to 16 she heard multiple voices in her head. Mens and women's. Now she was even more insane than she thought.
On one evening when Mary was coming home from school, she could feel her entire soul grow cold. At every sound that happened around her, she froze and shot a feared look in the direction. Once she had reached her house, her heart told her, "GO BACK! GO BACK! NOW IS NOT THE TIME!" but her mind did not listen. Mary walked inside the house fearful with all her soul. Getting even more fear seemed impossible, but when she got inside, she knew it wasn't true. Scrambling to get her phone out of her pocket she frantically looked around her. It looked like her same old house. But it was not the house she knew so well. In her old house she felt safe. In this house it was all but familiar. Without even knowing it she was dialing Sally's, Madie's and Faith's phone numbers to see if they could come over.
They were all too busy.
So instead Mary practically flew to her room, only to find her dog with a slit throat, blood pooling on the ice cold carpet and her cat scalped and hung by the neck in front of her door. All Mary thought was she had to get out of here! Running back down the stairs she tried to open the front door but………… after try after try, the door did not budge. Again and again. Harder and harder! The door only grew tighter. Turning around to find that all the blinds, all the windows were closed. All the lights, all the lamps, were turned off. She froze. Turned pale, and with every second that passed by, Mary could only feel one thing and one thing only. FEAR. The fear slowly then quickly churned into panic. She reached the nearest light switch, but just like the door. It did not work……… Turning around again,  to see three sets of blazing red eyes. A hard thick wind blew against the house making a faint howl with every crack. Thunder all around the house, grew and grew. But Mary only focused on the glowing red eyes. The lights turned on but no one was there. Mary stepped back, into something that was not there before………… Mary whirled around, to find a man that had goat horns coming out of his head black as the depths of the ocean, freshly painted fire-hidrent red skin, and a head with no hair. The man snickered that made Mary's heart cold.  But in an instant he was gone. Ok, I think I'm going crazy. Mary thought because it was impossible to speak. She started to run to the couch, and heard something coming from the coat closet. Mary stopped mid-run.
Right in front of the closet. Without even controlling her own arm, it slowly opened the door. A man, in all black didn't even look up when it opened. In a black fedora, black suit, black shirt, black tie. Everything! In black. Before Mary knew he was gouging her eyes out with a spelled knife. At least she thought it was spelled. Everything went black but all she could see was the red skin toned man, and a mirror.
And Bloody Mary she became.
