Chapter FiveA Chapter by AriannaWhen Jane woke up she was surrounded by doctors, it took all
of her energy to smile but she managed it. “ now I bet your all wondering why I
called you here.” She quipped feeling almost like she wasn’t going to be able
to finish the sentence but she had wanted to give this speech her whole life
and she wasn’t going to give up now just because they had over-medicated her on
something that was probably meant to keep her unconscious for say the next few
weeks. “your not telling me something, and I want to know what it
is. Those precious people that you call my parents.” She stumbled trying to
reach her arms up to wipe the drool from her lip but finding that her wrists
were restrained to her bed. She nodded at the nearest nurse head lolling to the
side somewhat pathetically. “may I have my arm back please.” She asked her voice
never matching the state her body seemed to be in. Had you not been watching her you would have assumed she was
fine, a teenage girl arguing on her own behalf. Not strapped to a hospital bed
drugged and delirious, eyes rolling back in her head. It left no doubt in her
doctor’s minds that this girl was not something to be trifled with. With the
amount of sedative in her body she should have been out cold, yet she hadn’t even
so much as stuttered and that was what worried them. As it should have. The nurse just smiled at her grabbing a rag and wiping away
the drool from her chin, “I’m sorry, hospital policy when somebody removes
their own IV. I am sure you understand.” She smiled and Jane decided that she
liked her and continued to talk to the room of doctors. “you see those parents that are no doubt paying for yet
another wing of this hospital, what is that now SEVEN? They have you wrapped
around their fingers right? If you do something wrong your boss will have your
head and while my mother the suburban house wife may not seem scary the thought
of wasting your time going to med school for nothing. Well that scares the s**t
out of each and every one of you, but so do I.” Jane giggled at that fact knowing that a crazy patient on enough morphine to knock out an elephant still talking in coherent sentences was enough to scare the s**t out of any doctor. What she knew and they didn’t because it happened to make its way off her charts, is that morphine didn’t do s**t. It didn’t help pain. Anastasia didn’t knock her out either, nasty shock for her in surgery when she was little. Sure this stuff made her a little woozy, light headed,
blurry. But it did nothing compared to what it did to anyone else they could
pump her full of the stuff and all they would do is kill her when they got to
the lethal dose. She had their attention now, she was sure of it. She made
sure she was playing up the looking
sick. After all she knew what she was supposed to look like when she was this
drugged out. Even if she didn’t look like it, she continued to look limp to let
her body look frail. Her mind however was sharp, she wanted them to know that
even if they could break her body. Even if they had the ability to take away her
moater skills they couldn’t take away her mind from her. That, was simple enough considering the drugs they put in
her to begin with were barely effecting her at all. She smirked a bit before
taking what seemed to be a shuddering breath and forcing her head into an
upright position. “you might have reason to fear their money, but you should fear my words and listen to them now. If you do not tell me what is wrong, and what has gone on since I have been put in this hospital bed, I will make every day of your life a living hell. You may question my ability to do so, but in your heart you know the fear you are feeling at this moment is validated. Trust your instincts, tell me what I want to know. Nobody will be fired, my parents do not need to know that anyone has told me and nothing needs to leave this room. I warn you all, I am a force to be reckoned with.” Jane straightened her neck and looked into the eyes of the closest resident who’s panic shone through. “I know that you have put as much medication in that IV as
you can without killing me. now if you want to kill me go right ahead, add some
more I don’t mind. From what I know right now I deserve it. But your other
option right now is to tell me what happened that night and not to sugar coat
it because I know that between the six of you in this room, someone can tell me
what the f**k happened. How my friend died and why I didn’t wake up for almost
six months. Got it?” The resident nodded before the only man in the room that didn’t seem to be quacking in his boots spoke. “I see you have figured out how hospitals truly work. We all like to think its about helping people, and we do we help a lot of people. However the people with the most money and those who are holding the most cards get helped most, and well you Miss browning seem to have a royal flush.” Jane just smiled at that knowing that at the very least she
would not have to go around her whole life not knowing what happened that
night. That was the one and only thing that she could not handle when it came
down to it. “on September the 12th at 4:37 PM you were admitted
to this hospital, you had serious head trauma. You were unconscious at the time
after being involved in a collision with another car, the damage would have
been much more serious had your driver not been so attentive and taken
preventative measures to ensure your safety. Given that you two were driving in
a small convertible and that the Truck that hit you was a large Ford F 150, it
smashed into the drivers side and your driver was killed instantly. You were in
a coma because a shard of glass ended up flying up into your forehead and you
ignored it to search for your driver. Driving it deeper into brain eventually it
got to be too much for your body and adrenaline just didn’t cut it anymore and
well… now you’re here.” The doctor
laughed “funny enough you would think my co workers would figure out that morphine and anstesiea don’t work on you too well and start to find something else but they just don’t seem to be catching on too well to that now do they?” he smiled and pulled a stick of gum out of his pocket “ my old man said the only way he really got you to listen to him was to bribe you with gum. Now I didn’t really think it would work since its been about seven years between hospital visits and all, but it seems your just about as scary now as he reckons you were back then… had the whole hospital staff in a tizzy wrapped around your little finger then… and im sure you will now. But if this doesn’t work, my wife is a hairdresser and she has been talking about what a shame it is that they haven’t let anyone do your hair while you were under.” That certainly got a smile out of Jane who opened her mouth
to accept the gum. “ ive met my match. I promise I wont pull my IV out anymore.
As long as you dont let my family stay for any longer than a half an hour at a
time…” she said to all the other doctors as her note of dismissal before she
smiled at the one before her. “your little smith.” She said “ ive heard a lot about you.” The doctor smiled at her, “ and you are the impossible patient. Im sure that most of the doctors are very relived that you have been comatose your entire stay here. Its saved them from well… spending every day like they spent today. Doctors live in fear of you Jane Browning ‘the Nine year old who does Calculus for fun.’” Jane scoffed at him, “calculus is fun, besides there isn’t much
else TO do when your cooped up in a hospital for what seems like your whole
life.” The doctor returned her scoff “ I STILL don’t do Calculus for fun” he quipped before smiling at her and reaching into the pocket of his blue scrubs. He pulled out a packet of sour watermelon gum and placed it on the side of her bed and began to untie the restraints that held her arms to the bed. “don’t rip your IV out again or my neck is on the line, and if I get fired I swear I will make every single day of your life a living hell.” She smiled at his use of her own line against her. “im a bit over dramatic sometimes Aren’t I? she asked. “just a tad” he responded before crossing the room and
opening the door. “ im going to send in a nurse now, don’t worry she isn’t too
horrible. Please don’t make her wet her pants its really not her fault that
someone has to keep an eye on you at all times now, actually its yours. So be
kind to her ill find the least annoying nurse on call that I can.” Jane smiled, some things about this hospital would never change and she thanked whatever deity happended to be watching over her for that. “you are a heaven send, you are.” She said popping another
piece of gum into her mouth lazily preparing herself for whatever scam she was
going to have to play on this nurse to get as much information out of her as
she could. Just then she heard a squealing noise from outside her
hospital room followed by a high pitched giggling sound. “oooooh bobby, is
this the patient. Does she need a nurse? Huh. Huh. Does she. Im available. Im your
girl. Im right here. Reporting for duty sir.” Jane almost gagged on the gum that was in her mouth as the
chipper voice reverberated around her ear canal. It was so happy and cheerful
it was disgusting. That much pep should not be allowed in one person. She was
waiting for him to respond silently begging him to say no… pleading. “um… Becky…yeah thanks.” Robert the doctor responded from outside her door. With that Jane DID gag on her gum. Punching herself in the chest in an attempt to give herself CPR though the Heimlich might have been a better choice at the moment she watched as the gum launched across the room. She gasped as the air flew back into her lungs just as the
small blonde woman who couldn’t be over the age of 21 walked into her room hand outstretched and said “ hi there Darling my name is Becky, we’re going to be
great friends.” Jane flopped back onto her pillow and let out a loud aggravated grunt before bellowing loudly in the direction of the door. “I TAKE THAT HEAVEN SENT COMMENT BACK NOW! YOU ARE STRAIGHT FROM THE DEVIL DOCTOR. YOU AND YOUR GUM!” © 2012 AriannaAuthor's Note
