Her knees hooked around the once red bars of the old iron play set her face was flushed pink, blood rushing to her head. “What’s my time” she asked to nobody in specific, “22 Minutes and 5 seconds” said a boy standing on the ground. “That’s good for me” she said as her worn sneakers released their grip on the separated pink pegs and she dropped to the ground. Her brown hair was tousled about glasses crooked and disheveled smile, she was the new upsidown champ, the most coveted position in the playgroup. “Nice Job Kristy” said the same boy. “Its Kristin” she reminded him smiling “and thanks” she stood in the center of the group of five. Smiling as they all congratulated her on her miraculous ability to ignore the pounding in her head for so long. “Kristin that was great, I can never stay up that long.” Said a girl with thick dark hair that fell in curls to her collar bone. Pink shirt adorned with flowers and frills nearly held a speck of dirt. Buckeye smile graced her face as she stared admiringly at the younger girl before her. “Yeah that was so cool! I wish I could do that! How do you do it? Huh!?!” the stream of questions came from the smallest child in the group. Her unruly black hair fell in tight spiraled curls down to the middle of her back. Huge brown eyes questioning her idol as she fidgeted with the hem on her little blue dress. “You ask too many questions just shut up sometimes” said a girl with blonde hair. “It wasn’t even that long” she scoffed. “You’re just mad because she beat you” said the little girl. “Arianna shut up” said the oldest boy “JENIFER JOSH IS BEING MEAN TO ME AGAIN!” she yelled going to hide behind the girl dressed in pink. “Josh stop being a jerk, Arianna stop being such a pest, Nicole stop being so bitter.” Everybody glared at her after those statements apart from Kristin who had dropped to the ground and begun to yank the grass from the ground. “Why don’t you go play on the swings” Jen said to Arianna as she smiled. “Okay” said the girl reluctantly trudging her way over to the swings before taking a seat on the ladder and watching the others play.

She muttered to herself, “Why can’t I play with them, I don’t like playing by myself there’s nothing to do. I’m only one year younger than Kristin, and two than Nicole and three years than Jen and four than josh. Not that I want to play with josh anyways he is mean and his dog bites people” she sat there for a while wondering why they were being so mean, she was used to it most the time because none of them were the nicest but they were family so she had to like them. Or at least that’s what they said but she didn’t quite believe them. She didn’t really have to like anyone she didn’t like she just had to put up with these ones for longer. She smiled coming to the conclusion that she was hungry and that it had to be snack time soon she jumped off the ladder and walked over to the group

. “Jen, is it snack time yet?” she asked trying not to seem annoying at all, this however didn’t seem to work on josh who always found her annoying. “go away little Barry we are having a discussion for big kids and you are still too little” she glared at him, even only being six she had already perfected this to the point where the intensity made the boy re think what he had just said to her. “I wasn’t talking to you” she said coldly turning to face her cousin. “So?” she asked nicely returning to her sweet demeanor. “Ill go check” said josh from behind her as he walked towards the house. Everybody smiled as he walked away, each for different reasons

. Arianna’s being that she was always glad to be rid of the mean person that she unfortunately had to deal with every day. Jennifer because she could finally slouch and stop from trying to look cute. Nicole because she could go back to sitting by herself and not have to remind josh how pretty Jen looked every other five seconds and Kristin because she wanted to go play with the puppy and josh would never let her. Kristin ran up the hill to go pet the small wiener dog knowing that as soon as josh came out of the house and saw her in his back yard she would be yelled at but she really didn’t care. Arianna sat down in the grass next to Jen and smiled. “Why do you like him?” she asked not quite yet understanding the concept of crushes yet. “He really is nice once you get to know him” Jen replied witch elicited a giggle fit in the smaller girl beside her. “What’s so funny?” she asked “i'm trying to image josh being nice and it’s really funny” Jen glared at her with a stare so icy that she immediately stopped giggling. “I still think he is mean”

just then josh walked out of the house holding snacks in the fold of his shirt. Jens back straightened and Kristin rolled down the hill, attempting to make it look like she had walked up to do just that. “Goldfish for Nicole and Scooby snacks for Jen, Gushers for Kristin, and A fruit roll up for Arianna.” They all muttered their thanks. “Josh mine is already open.” Said Arianna confused. “Oh well” he said “just eat it and shut up” she was about to argue but Jen was giving her a look that said she would have no back up on this one. So she did just what josh said for once and shut up. She opened the wrapper glancing into the package and pulled out the small red thing inside. It didn’t look like a fruit roll up, but Jen was still giving her that look like she better just keep quiet and eat her snack so she put it in her mouth.

Immediately she regretted this decision as her mouth was on fire. Tears poured out of her eyes as she spit out the red intruder. Everyone made a circle around her trying to figure out what exactly had happened as josh laughed highstericly. Nicole joined in glancing at the pepper on the ground that caused her cousins tears.” WHAT DID YOU DO TO HER?” Jen screamed at him. “Relax it was just a pepper she is just being a baby” Arianna ran towards the house in desperate search of water. Hearing Jen yell at josh in the background she would have smiled had she not needed to get to the water so quickly.

Twenty minutes, four popsicles and 8 pieces of bread later her tongue finally felt normal and she went back outside. Josh approached her, glancing at Jen who glared at him with such ferocity he looked away immediately. “i’m um, sorry” he said “I don’t believe you” she said as she walked around him to go sit on the swing set expecting them all to continue playing, but they didn’t. They stood there looking at her as she pushed herself on the swing. For once she didn’t want to be with them. She wanted to be as far away from them, from him as possible. But she couldn’t get far enough away on the swing set.

They started walking towards her, and she pumped higher and higher blocking out the sounds of their voices. “I don’t want to talk” she said. “I told you she is just a baby” josh said looking up at her as she swung higher and higher. “I think you should go home now” Jen said “ I think Arianna was right about you, your nothing more than a jerk and I don’t know why any of us put up with you goodbye” she turned away from the boy whose attention she had been so desperate for only a half hour before. Arianna giggled, maybe she didn’t have to love her family, but that certainly didn’t mean she couldn’t.
