Garum: Something FishyA Poem by DeepshikhaAh, garum! The beloved fish sauce of the Romans! What's better than fermented fish?
Garum is a sauce, Quite wonderfully so, Made from fermented fish, It spices up anything, this I know. The rich loved it, And so did the poor, The supreme condiment they called it, It had quite an allure. The garum, the top, Went on to the wealthy, While the allec, the bottom, Helped the poor flavor foods rather healthy. Mackerel, tuna, and eel among others, Fermented in Roman sun and birne, What a salty flavor, It could make any food shine! Mixed in wine, vinegar, Black pepper and oil, It flavored boiled veal and steamed mussels, even pear-and-honey soufflé, they wouldn’t be soiled! The Romans considered it the best cure, It could do anything, There’s no debate, Garum makes my heart sing! This I beseech you, As I bid you farewell, Try some garum today, And about it, do tell! © 2009 DeepshikhaAuthor's Note
