The Perfect Leaf

Oh, look at that leaf, floating away...I wonder if it has a story to tell...

What are you, my little one,

oh shining, fallen leaf?

With your pretty painted faces,

and modest little home,

I wonder how you I may please.

Golden splashes through the center;

dainty red tipped fingers;

only a hint of what you once were:

a prince of great prestige.

A little further you drift anew,

telling your noble friends adieu.

A journey you take, far and far away,

untill you land at my feet; gently, with praise.

And as I marvel at your beauty,

oh little leaf!

tell me one thing more...

Will I see you again as the season fades,

Or will you journey underfoot, rising once again?

Author's Note

The last line is to say that the leaf will someday be decomposed and give nourishment to another tree, perhaps enabling another leaf to make the same journey.
