It didn't happen.
one forgot about Alex and me. even after a month and four dates. I would feel the stares of people boring into my head as I walked down the halls to my class and even more so as I walked down the halls with Alex. Though Alexa didn’t care much, Lizzi, Vi, Fina. Aziira, Kana, and Sammy would contiunally ask me what was going on with me and him. I even found a sign saying, ‘Forever Mrs.Arianna Venzetti’ taped to my locker. It got to the point that I actually told Alex to stay away from me for a day or so. He, however, just laughed when I said that.
“And that’s going to help this how?” he had said, trying to keep from cracking up.
“Ugh,” I sighed back. “Maybe then, they’d stop!”
He then lost all of his face control and it wrinkled up into his cute, ‘you-are-so-goddamn-funny’ grin. And I couldn’t help myself either, it really was a stupid idea, and so I started laughing with him. And then he had hugged me and walked off laughing to his sixth period Physics and I to English.
But the day before winter break, it all quieted down, because there was a new relationship in the works. Dafne Carotta and Jacob Virga. Dafne wasn’t the most known person around, in fact, she was supposedly at the bottom of our so-called social ladder of the 11th grade, while Jacob ranked after Luke Russo, who was behind Ciro, John Rizzo, Giulio, and Alex, respectively.
I got off the bus and went into school happy, not because poor Dafne was being harassed by Anna Esposti, who was in love with Jake, but because no one was paying any attention to me, and last night Alex had emailed me. saving there would be a suprise for me, waiting at my locker. My curiosity only grew because Alex hadn’t ridden the bus that morning.
I walked through the locker covered halls of Stratford, deftly doging all the people that knew me so I could quickly get to my locker. As I approached it on the fifth floor, the 11th and 12th grade floor, I saw Alex standing next to my locker, leaning against it, apperntly waiting for me. I nearly ran over to him, giving him a bear hug when I got to my locker. And for some reason, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. His dirty blond hair was slightly messed up, making his surfer styled hair look like it had just come from California. He was wearing a brown Abercrombie sweater and faded blue jeans and I could smell his signature cologne straight through the fur ofhis sweater. And his eyes glowed, crystal blue and warm. He hugged hack and handed me a small, silver wrapped box with a white bow on top. I opened my locker and stuffed my backpack, my coat, and flute case in it. I then dug around in my bag and pulled out a small black package and handed it to him.
“How ‘bout we open them during study hall?” I suggested as we were walking down to our home rooms at the end of the hail.
“Alright,” he said, thoughtfully. “Are you doing anything tonight?”
“Dad and Isa are going to sevices tonight, moms going to an art show at the mall, Giulio and Celia are going to the dance, and I'm going to stay home and read. Why?”
He pushed my bangs back, behind my ear. “I felt like going ice skating.” He paused. “With you.”
I smiled. just as we stood outside my homeroom. “Sure, it’ll beat reading Tithe For the millionth time.”
He gave me another hug and hurried off to his homeroom.
Our homeroont period was 15 minutes long, with the Pledge and “THE News"-our morning announcements on the TVs all through the 7th through 12th grades.
The TV came on as soon as the late bell rang, and Kate Vesa, a 12th grader, started with the announcements. Instead of watching her blabber off I decided to pull out Valiant and finish reading it. I eneded up reading straight through announcements, pretty much ignoring my friends who were trying to get my attention.
The bell for first period rang, and I stuffed my book into my hag. I walked out of Mrs. Kira’s room and into the hall towards study hall in the library. I opened the door to the steps going down to the 3rd floor, where the library was.
‘Hey!” I heard from behind me.
I turned around and saw it was Jamie Newman. my homeroom buddy. “Hey,’ I said back, pausing so she could catch up with me. Jamie was short and had long, auburn hair and green eyes. She was also extremely pale, making her look ghostly.
“What was up with you in homeroom?’ she asked as we both waslked towards the library.
“I don’t know. I just didn’t feel like talking.” I shrugged.
She grinned, a mischeivious smile that actually brought color to her face. “You and Alex are going out tonight, aren’t you?”
I smiled, remembering the way he had a slight resistance to me letting go of him. like he wanted to hold me there forever.
“I’ll take that as a yes, then.” she said, laughing as we walked into the library.
Our library was huge. I mean, ginourmous huge. It took about half the 3rd floor. We had three different sections: for the kidnergardeners to the 3rd graders, the fourth graders to the sixth graders. and then the rest of us. We had 12 librarians, one for each grade, and we also had about 20 different classrooms inside the library. Our study hall, however, took place at the tables in the center of the library, where there were bean bags and giant cushions to sit on. I spotted Alex talking to John Rizzo near the library counter and headed toward him, with Jamie behind me.
"Heyy,” called John as soon as he saw me.
“Hey,” I called back, giving both John and Alex a hug.
“What’s up girl?” asked John, using his girly voice that he reserved for me.
“Nothing,” I exclaimed, mimicing his voice. “You?”
“Oh, my gosh!” he exclaimed hack, Alex and Jamie laughing at both of us. ‘Nothing!”
“God, John.” put in Alex, laughing and also trying to mimic our tones. “You and her are like, the same!”
At that we all cracked up, causing Mrs. Sartori, the desk lady, to throw us looks. “Shouldn’t you all be in study hall right now?” she shot in her heavy Italian voice.
“Yeah, Mrs.S.” said Jamie, making her face look appologetic. “We should get going guys.” She nudged.
Mrs.S rolled her eyes and shooed us were we needed to he.
“Hey, man,’ John turned to Alex. “I have to find this book, so see ya around.’ ‘
‘Kay,” said Jamiee.
“See ya,” I said.
“Later,” Alex added in.
John gave me and Jamie hungs, and slapped arm with Alex and went on his way.
“Isn’t he awesome?” I said to Alex after he left.
“Are you hitting on him?” Alex asked, raising an eyebrow and laughing. I threw a sly look at him. “Maybe.”
We walked into the center of the library to our study hall laughing. Jamie went over to her boyfriend, Jack Boroli, while me and Alex slumped onto an empty cushion. We sat back to back, with a thick mountain of cushion in between us.
“So,” I suggested. “How about we open our presents to each other now. I’m dying to see what you got me.”
“Like wise,” Alex said, grinning.
I reached into my bag and bulled it out, gently pulling the ribbon on top open and carefully unwrapping it. I stuffed the wrapping paper into my hag and saw that I was holding a small cardboard box, much like one used to hold jewelery. I gingerly lifted up the lid, and saw a peach colored peice of paper inside it. floating on the top. I lifted it up, and saw that there was a message written in white. I read it aloud. “To that girl. That girl that I want to hold for all eternity. That girl who makes me nervous. That girl: The girl reading this card. That girl whom I love.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. I saw Alex turn his head toward me, smiling. I set the card down next to me and lifted up the foam that covered what was inside.
Seeing what it was. I let out a small shriek. I gently took it by the chain and lifted it up so I could see it in the light. It glittered and gleamed with its own light and when I touched it. it felt like cool mist.
I was a pair of angel wings, folded down to form a head. It was made entierly out of silver and the detailing on the wings was breathtaking. I could see every Ueather expertly carved, looking...alive.
I felt Alex slide over next to me. “Open it up, there’s something I know you’ll like.
I nodded. unable to say anything. I put the heart in the palm of my hand and with the other, tried to lift up one of the wings. And to my supprise, it lifted, the wing spreading out. I lifted the other wing; it also spread out. And what I saw took my breath away even more.
It was a painting of my angel, but this time, he was facing entirely towards me. his hair was now white, and his one hand covered half of his face. But it was my angel all the same.
Alex took the necklace and slid it on me, using the most gentlest movements.
I wiped my eyes using my sleeve and turned to Alex. “If we weren’t in school. I’d kiss you.” I said, feeling very sentimental.
His smile only became wider. “I opened yours.” he said. “And it’s a rock.”
I smiled. “Put your hands on either end aand twist.”
He did so and it twisted open, revealing a mass of purple crystals filling the inside of the rock.
“It’s an amethyst.’ I explained. “So you can remember that I’m not always what it seems on the outside.”
