Reflections of Christ in Hans Holbein’s Dead Christ

Reflections of Christ in Hans Holbein’s Dead Christ

A Poem by Nathaniel Lufkin

Three days had passed

The pain of the recent days are gone

yet with the pain came something else

I felt joy and relief

Awakening

Raising my hands only to see that they had not been healed

I drop my legs to see my damaged feet

The crown had left its mark on my head and the spear in my abdomen

Yet not a bone broken after the whippings, beatings and flaying

Reflections

This bread is my body and this wine is my blood

eat and drink

Pray that you will not fall into temptation

Pray that you will stay loyal

Take away the coming torrent if it is your will

I do not want the weight of  this sin

I am scared Father

I do not want the weight of the cross

Father

Kiss of betrayal

three denials

why are they so quick to condemn me

Pilate knows I am innocent

yet he still sends me by the will of the crowd

These people praised me days before

now they stand here mocking me

My body has been whipped and flayed

Now I wear a crown which sends blood down my face

Water

All of their sins were on my shoulder

I have paid for it all

Watched my mother cry

I am thirsty

They came to make the death quicker

Yet I was already gone

Open

My life was for that moment

I suffered as a man

I died for their sins

What will be their reactions to my awakening

The great stone moved to have a beam of sun show

The grave is now empty
